The book also contains six detailed full-page drawings, including a frontispiece of the king and an illustration of the heir-apparent, Prince Chulalongkorn, who became the most revered king of Siam and was called The Liberator because he abolished slavery in the kingdom. The author writes in Victorian prose, and the book is a bit slow reading, but fascinating history. It became the basis for the musical, The King and I. .
