Shel-1 Ion Mackenzie, the well known literary critic of the Philadelphia Press, has read the work in manuscript, and says that it is not only superior to the authors The Houseliold of Bouvcrie, whichestablished her fame as a novelist, but, as far as I can judge--and I have been as determined a novel reader, all my life, as Lord Macaulay ever was--deserves to be regarded as one of the very best I works of fiction produced during the last twenty years. Originality of design, perfectness of execution, accurate character-drawing, clever construction of plot, and good local coloring, are its leading 1 features. The story is cast in France in the time of the Revolution. Among the dramatis persona, Dr. Mackenzie says, is Joseph Balsamo, historically celebrated, under the title of Count Cagliostro, who played a leading part in the affair of the Diamond Necklace conspiracy, which so much injured the reputation of Queen Marie Antoinette. He is introduced here in a very skillful manner, without any extravagance of circumstance or detail. Balsa mo figures in Alexander Dumas Memoirs of a Physician but no other novelist, until now, has brought him into fiction. A late number of The Christian Observer, Louisville, Kj, . , contained, as a supplement, a reprint of the first issue of The Religious Remembrancer, dated September 4, 1813. The paper was subsequently known as the Philadclphian, and in 1839 was consolidated with the Southern Religious Telegraph, to form The Christian O6sever.
