New Century Publications. Hardcover. New. The enactment of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 was a milestone in the history of socio-economic legislations in India. The Act was passed to create awareness among the people regarding their legal rights as consumers and to protect them against unfair trade practices. The Act was amended in 1991 and 1993 to extend its coverage and scope and to enhance the powers of the redressal machinery. The historic judgement of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (National Commission) in 1992 that medical services also constitute service under the Act, sparked off a country-wide controversy. Finally, the controversy was laid to rest when the Supreme Court (in the Indian Medical Association vs. V. P. Shantha case) held in 1995 that medical services are covered under the Consumer Protection Act, 1986. The judgement of the Supreme Court has wide implications for the patients as also for the doctors. This study is related to the investigation of patients perception of medical services in India. It also examines the implications of the application of Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (CPA) to the medical services and its fall out on patient-doctor relationship. Furthermore, the study evaluates the approach of the redressal agencies under the Act in deciding cases relating to deficiency in medical services., New Century Publications, Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 2006. First edition. Hardcover. New. 15 x 23 cm. The thirteenth century opened new vistas in the world history, particularly Asia. It witnessed the rise and fall of different dynasties and ultimately allowed the Mongols to survive as the mightiest power in China, Russia (Kipchak), Central Asia, and Persia for more than a century. They brought under their sway the Islamic lands of the Orient except Indian where the Turks had already established themselves as a powerful state during this period. The present study is the first of its kind dealing with Indiaâs overland trade with Central Asia and Persia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The book seeks to interpret the working of the political forces in India and her neighbouring countries which shaped the commercial network of the medieval period. Despite the Mongol devastations, the yasa of Chingiz Khan and the zeal displayed by the Turks crated an aura of mercantile activities. Printed Pages: 198., Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Like the products of the "sea-change" described in Ariel's song in The Tempest, modernist writing is "rich and strange." Its greatness lies in its density and its dislocations, which have until now been viewed as a repudiation of and an alternative to the cultural implications of turn-of-the-century political radicalism. Marianne DeKoven argues powerfully to the contrary, maintaining that modernist form evolved precisely as a means of representing the terrifying appeal of movements such as socialism and feminism. Organized around pairs and groups of female-and male-signed texts, the book reveals the gender-inflected ambivalence of modernist writers. Male modernists, desiring utter change, nevertheless feared the loss of hegemony it might entail, while female modernists feared punishment for desiring such change. With water imagery as a focus throughout, DeKoven provides extensive new readings of canonical modernist texts and of works in the feminist and African-American canons not previously considered modernist. Building on insights of Luce Irigaray, Klaus Theweleit, and Jacques Derrida, she finds in modernism a paradigm of unresolved contradiction that enacts in the realm of form an alternative to patriarchal gender relations. October 1891: A young girl, Leonie Vernier, and her brother, Anatole, are invited to leave the gas-lit streets of Paris and travel south to a mysterious country house - La Domaine de la Cade - near Carcassonne. There, in the ancient, dark woods, Leonie comes across a ruined sepulchre and is drawn into a century's old mystery of murder, ghosts and a strange set of tarot cards that seem to hold enormous power over life and death. October 2007: Meredith Martin decides to take a break from her research trip in Paris - where she is studying Claude Debussy - and head down south to a beautiful hotel in the woods. She becomes fascinated by the history of the place and particularly by the tragic events of one Halloween night more than a century before that shocked the small community. Thus her fate becomes entwined with that of Leonie. But it is only when she too stumbles over a secluded glade in the forest that she realises that the secrets it contains are far from dead and buried' A haunting mystery of revenge and obsession, set against the rich backdrop of southern France, SEPULCHRE is the stunning new novel from the bestselling author of LABYRINTH. . 2008. Taking Lives asserts that genocide is not a sporadic or random event, nor is it necessarily linked to economic development, national psychosis or social decay. Genocide is a special sort of mass destruction conducted with the approval of the state apparatus. Life and death issues are uniquely fundamental, since they alone serve as a precondition for the examination of all other issues. Such concerns move us beyond abstract, formalist frameworks into new ways of viewing the social and political study of the human condition. Taking Lives is a fundamental work for political scientists, sociologists, and all those concerned with the stateýs propensity toward evil. Taking Lives is highly recommended reading for all those interested in how holocausts could happen in Germany, Poland, Tibet, Cambodia, Ruwanda, and others in the last half of the 20th century.".
