URING the stirring times of the uxorious Tudor, the family of Arlosh or Losh were comfortably established at Woodside, four miles south of Carlisle. They held lands and hereditaments of value at that period, and it is not improbable that they were known men of an earlier dynasty in these northern parts. Family tradition--seldom wanting to the favoured of fortune, and oft as conspicuous as the ancient full-bottomed wigs upon the heads of claimants of a long pedigree--avers a great deal respecting the early career of the Loshes; that they were originally graingers by occupation, under the rule of Holm-Cultram Abbey, in Cumberland; and that one branch of the family made a raid eastward, and effected a clearing at Inglewoodside, and there laid the foundation of the present home--Woodside. This notion The Traditions of the Family. 141 derives a certain amount of support from the present Loshes having estates in Holm-Cultram; at the same time, it is but a matter of conjecture whence they came, and why they settled on the pastoral banks of the gentle-flowing Peterill; suffice to say they appear in sixteenth-century legible history as Cumberland landowners, or as canonicals of the old Catholic church in Carlisle. Concurring with the prevailing sentiment of these latter days that wisely measures the capacity of the individual man rather than his ancestral accidents, recognising only those marked hereditary influences, or psychological semblances bearing an historical meaning, it is all the more agreeable to state that the family under discussion have long been known as an intelligent, prosperous, and estimable race of Cumbrians. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: THOMAS TICKELL. Born A.d. 1686. Died A.d. 1740. JHOMAS TICKELL, the son of the Rev. Richard Tickell, was born in 1686 at Bridekirk in Cumberland; and in April 1701 became a member of Queen's College, Oxford; in 1708 he obtained his Master of Arts, and in 1710 was chosen Fellow, for which, as he did not comply with the statutes by taking orders, he obtained a dispensation from the crown. He held his Fellowship till 1726, and then vacated it by marrying in that year at Dublin. "Tickell," writes Dr Johnson, "was not one of those scholars who wear away their lives in closets; he entered early into the world, and was long busy in public affairs, in which he was initiated under the patronage of Addison, whose notice he is said to have gained by his verses in praise of' Rosamond.'" These verses received Johnson's approval as "elegant encomiastic strains," equal to, if not superior to, Pope's on the same subject. Possibly there were other ties than Rosamond sympathies between Addison and Tickell, and a family connection has been cited as one; moreover, there was more or less congeniality of " manners, temper, talents, and principles between them." Addison is generally creditedAddisoris Friendship for Tickell. 109 with being modest in demeanour, a scholar, poet, and Christian; and so was Tickell in Addison's eyes, Addison also was a Whig, and Dean Swift in his fun designated Tickell Whiggissimus. Tickell's poem " On the Prospect of Peace," inserted in the Spectator, I5th November 1714, received Addison's commendation, and went through six editions: on no other grounds could it have met with such success.
