Excerpt: ... was to raise us from our abjcct state of sin? Since he obeyed the law and submitted to the curse in our place, may we not conclude that it was to redeem us from the law with its curse? If he made atonement for our sins, it was that we might be saved from wrath. On such grounds, as exhibited to us in the gospel, are we warranted to believe in him. By assuming our nature, by taking our place in law, and by acting according to that relation he could have no less in view, respecting us, than our salvation. Yea; for our sakes he became poor that we through his poverty might be rich. Let us believe this that we may be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, &c. (3.) The all-sufficiency of Christ, as a Saviour, exhibited in the gospel, warrants sinners tp believe in him. This includes every thing that renders him a fit and able Saviour, to save, even to the uttermost, the greatest of sinners. This ability to save is not merely in itself a warrant to believe for salvation, otherwise devils might avail themselves of the advantage of it. But while he is revealed as a Saviour to sinners, it is no small ground of encouragement to faith that he is able to save. It is the divine testimony concerning him, That he is able to save, even to the uttermost, all that come unto God through him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Heb. vii. 25. His allsufficiency, as a Saviour, comprehends every thing that belongs to him in that character, and which fits him for the completing of the great work of salvation. All divine perfections, in common with the Father and Spirit, belong to him. The arduous nature of the work rendered such qualifications necessary. He has in his possession a perfect righteousness for the justification of sinners--a righteousness which he wrought out himself; and ...
