Pearson Education. First edition. Softcover. New. Indian States at a Glance 2008-09: Performance, Facts and Figures presents information on the 29 states and 6 union territories of India in a set of 22 volumes. A compilation of the latest facts and figures, ranging from the basic socio-economic and demographic indicators to development parameters, these books also provide brief profiles of the states covering their history, culture, cuisine, handicrafts, places of tourist interest as well as an account of their performance vis-à-vis other states. Andhra Pradesh, the fourth largest state in the country, has been a middle-order performer so far, with unexploited potential of its huge resources. Though growth in the state income has been generally below the Indian trend, the states contribution to Indias growth story has been significant, whether it is in agriculture as the rice bowl of India or in the services sector as a hub for higher education and the IT sector. Infrastructure in this state is better than in most states and connectivity through air, road and rail network is high. Intra-state disparities, however, are large, with some districts like Adilabad and Medak lagging behind others, and this is a cause of concern. Andhra Pradesh has ambitious plans of raising its growth rate to 9 per cent over the next five years. It is a state that has shown considerable openness to innovation and technology, and with concerted effort from all stakeholders, it can achieve its high growth target. * Companion Site * Post Review * View User Reviews * View Published Reviews Printed Pages: 144. An unorthodox and adventurous traveler, Englishwoman Dodwell has used horses, camels, canoes and rafts for transport in Africa and China as well as in Papua New Guinea, where she was prominently featured in BBC-TV's prize-winning film River Journeys , rafting down the River Wahgi ("eater of men"), braving arrest three times and, on one occasion, a pelting with stones. In this book, she tells how her plans for a horseback journey in Eastern Turkey were stymied when she found the mountain passes clogged with snow. Awaiting thaw, Dodwell went by bus to Iran, where she borrowed and hired horses for day-long excursions to historic sites. When her visa for Iran was about to expire, she went to Karachi in Pakistan to renew it. Never missing an opportunity, she visits an Afghan refugee camp in Pakistan and explores Baluchistan. Then, further adventures in Iran and finally into Eastern Turkey, where she buys a gray Arab stallion and sets out to explore the area, from lowland rice paddies to Mount Ararat. Dodwell is interested in people, history, architecture and artifacts, an irresistible combination. Her first-rate travel adventure is in the tradition of fearless globe-trotters like Dame Freya Stark and Devla Murphy. New. 140 pages. For centuries the songs of Homer, the blind poet of Greece, recounting the heroic deeds of the great Hector and lion-hearted Achilles, have delighted the children, young and old, of many lands. But part of our own heritage, and nearer to us in race and time, are these stories of Beowulf and Frithiof (Fridtjhof). The records of lives nobly lived are an inspiration to noble living. With the hope that the courage, truth, endurance, reverence, and patriotism shown by these heroes of the Northland will arouse interest and emulation. This little book is offered to our young adults and children. "The Story of Frithiof" is based upon Holcomb's translation of Bishop Tegnér's poem, "The Saga of Frithiof" which charts Frithiof's and Ingeborg's undying love for each other and the lengths Frithiof had to go to, to eventually win her hand. If ever a story was to teach the young about perseverance and endurance, this is it. The epic Beowulf was written in England, but is set in Scandinavia. It has variously been dated to between the 8th and the early 11th centuries. The original is an epic poem told in historical perspective; a story of epic events and of great people of a heroic past. It follows the life of Beowulf, his rites of passage and his maturing from boy to man through facing and overcoming adversity and evil. This was the time when men were knighted for achieving great feats, and great their feats were. A time when the successful application of brain and brawn gained a man high standing in the community and possibly even higher office in the land. 33% of the publisher's profit will be donated to charities for educational purposes. London: Abela Publishing, 22 December 2009. First edition. Paperback. New. 152 pages. The Bible tells of a remote time when men journeyed from the East and found a plain in the land of Shinar. . . . "And they said to one another, 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower whose top may reach heaven.'" Centuries after the building of the Tower of Babel, an Arab poet, El Deraoui, wrote of another tower, the Pharos, the great lighthouse off the northern coast of Egypt, "On its height a dome enshadowed me and thence I saw my friends the stars. I thought the sea below me was a cloud and that I had set up my tent in the midst of the heavens." Since ancient times towers have made a poetic appeal. Towers of many kinds, in all ages and in all countries, have met varying needs. There have been watchtowers, cathedral towers, clock towers, bell towers, towers to commemorate victories, towers to honour the living and towers to celebrate the dead. Around many of the towers, legends have clung - some of these legends are very well known. Towers will always stand midway between fact and poetry, the legends relating to them, more often than not, look in these two directions. This book has brought together 11 such legends with a desire to record some of the characteristic tales that blend with a few of the noble towers of the earth. Joseph Jacob's first volume-English Fairy Tales [1890]-did not exhaust the scanty remains of traditional English folktales. Most of the forty-four tales that appear in More English Fairy Tales had never before appeared in print. In compiling More English Fairy Tales [1894], Joseph Jacobs flouted the Florklorist's creed, choosing to present stories that would fill children's imaginations "with bright trains of images". Vividly painted princesses, Pied Pipers, pots of gold, giants, speaking cats, Kings, Hoybahs, wise men, washerwomen, and more overflow from the pages of this volume, all bound by the common threads of basic moral lessons. Many of the tales were recorded verbatim from storytellers. They are by no means in an authorised form, and even touch on the "vulgar" using archaic and colloquial English. In the times following Jacob's original printing, the literary establishment objected to the use of such archaic colloquialisms. These tales were told for generations in a form that used these dialects and "vulgar" words for effect. However, the traditional form makes these stories all the richer in a modern setting. We invite you to curl up with this volume and be transported back in time to when England had a hundred or more local dialects-a time when the words Lawkamercyme and noddle were commonplace. Paper Back . New. (Size: 21x14cms.), The novel is the saga of life in the embattled Bonda tribe that inhabits the mountains and forests of the Malkangiri regionin Orissa. Rich in elements of folk-lore, mythology and magic, the main focus of the book is the social condition of the bOnda women. The author's affection most clearly goes to Budei, who becomes a symbol of female suffering and forbearance. The translation, which has retained most of the original Bonda terms, beautifully and evocatively captures the essence of a fragile world that resists transplanting. More than a chronicle from an exotic culture, the novel is a living record of the social and political upheaval that India is going through. x+298 Yr. of Pub.2001 8125018964, Old Tappan, New Jersey, U.S.A.: Fireside, 2001.
