With a fine nineteenth century engraved armorial bookplate and binder's ticket on front paste-down. LARGE PAPER STATE OF THE FIRST MAJOR EDITION of Walton's great biographical collection, issued as a complement to the same publisher's 1823 edition of The Compleat Angler. Walton lived in the parish of St. Dunstan's where Donne was vicar; his life of his friend was written in 1640 as an introduction to a collection of the poet-clergyman's sermons. The other subjects were also personal friends; their biographies were first published in 1651 (Wotton), 1665 (Hooker), 1670 (Herbert) and 1678 (Sanderson). Plomer says about John Pemberton: "junior, bookseller and publisher in London, The Buck in Fleet Street, 1739 (?) - 1744 (?). Son of John Pemberton the elder. During his father's lifetime the firm was known as J. and J. Pemberton. They were the publishers for the House of Commons, and also for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. After the death of his father in 1739, John the younger was joined by his brother Henry, and their joint imprint is found in books until 1744; but as there is no mention of John in the will of Henry, proved in 1748, it may be presumed that he died or retired between 1744 and 1748."
