Set in Paris at the time of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572)" per Jessica Amanda Salmonson's annotated bibliography of the author. Half-leather [spine and corners] and marbled paper over boards [about 4" x 6"], top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, 229 pages, tissue-guarded frontispiece. An ex-library copy [as evidenced only by a "Property of the Libraries for U. S. Soldiers and Sailors..." bookplate affixed to the front paste-down. Exterior binding is worn, front hinge cracked, upper corner fold to one leaf, and there is light damp staining to the front and rear portion of the text block but all text is easily readable LR2/2E, The Rodgers Company, 2, New York, New York: The Classics of Liberty Library, 1993. Fine/No Jacket. This special edition was privately printed for the members of The Classics of Liberty Library. Used as a textbook throughout the country for more than thirty years, British historian and diplomat, James Bryce's "The American Commonwealth" is still viewed as a standard authority by American Historians. Volume I covers The National Government, The State Governments, and The Party System.Hardcover. Bound in quarter black genuine leather, linen boards with gilt design on cover. Spine is stamped with 22-karat gold design/lettering, and has raised bands. Film was prepared from the first edition of 1888, courtesy of the Mervyn H. Sterne Library of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The text paper was especially made for this edition by the P. H. Glatfelter Company. Endleaves are a specially commissioned design of Richard J. Wolfe in beautiful, marbled blue, red, gold, black and white. Minorly scratched, all edges are gilded. Black silk ribbon bookmark attached. Pages are strong and clean, in pristine condition with no marginalia or environmental markings whatsoever. Folding plate depicting area map of the United States in 1776.
