"Two of Behring's other early articles dealt more narrowly with the primary reason iodoform had begun to fall into disrepute, namely its high toxicity. In the first of these articles, "On Iodoform Intoxication," *) Behring summarized recent research on iodine intoxication and noted that despite their differences, all researchers had reached a consensus on the Standard Symptoms of iodine poisoning, including accelerated pulse and breathing, emaciation, raised temperature, motor disruptions, and cerebral Symptoms such as pronounced indolence and somnolence. In addition to these worrisome Symptoms, however, recent reports on cases of iodoform poisoning had described alarming psychotic Symptoms including hallucinations and marked melancholy. On the basis of a close review of these cases as well as experiments with rabbits, Behring distinguished between iodine poisoning, which was also often present after the application of iodoform, and those Symptoms that were specific to iodoform poisoning, namely the recently reported psychotic ones. Two years later when he was already stationed in Winzig, Behring wrote a second toxicological article, "On Iodoform Poisoning and Its Treatment." On the basis of experiments on rabbits in Posen, Behring showed that iodoform functioned as an acid that neutralized essential alkalis in the rabbits' blood and organs, with the resulting Symptoms of poisoning. However, by injecting alkalis at the same time as the iodoform, he had been able to produce very high tolerance for iodoform in rabbits. Since the blood of herbivores like rabbits was less well-buffered than that of carnivores, he was not certain that his research findings about iodoform could be extended to dogs, cats, or humans. After examining experiments on carnivorous animals by others, however, he suggested that a related, but somewhat modified, metabolic transformation resulting from alkali depletion was probably responsible for the toxic Symptoms in these animals following the introduction of iodoform. In all cases of iodoform intoxication, however, Behring recommended using a 5 to 10 percent solution of the alkali potassium bicarbonate as an antidote. He had used it with favorable results in several cases of intoxication that arose when he applied iodo-form to serious wounds, cases that he discussed in detail at the outset of the article. Thus, in his early publications Behring appeared as a Champion of the antiseptic iodoform. Moreover, he used both clinical observations and biochemical research in the laboratory to demonstrate the mechanism by which iodoform worked as an antiseptic, determine the reasons for its toxicity, and explore the possibilities of an effective antidote. By focusing on the beneficial properties of iodoform as an antiseptic, Beh-ring had also directed attention to new pathways in antisepsis, ones that opened the prospect of applying agents that posed less risk of damaging tissues than did the use of bactericidal or bacteria-inhibiting Chemicals and hence, contrasted favorably with those antiseptics advocated by Lister and Koch. Moreover, by 1884 four of his articles had been published in Germany's leading medical weekly. All of this pointed to a promising career as an important medical researcher." Derek S. Additionally, locations of several historically important sites are shown: Lafayette Park, where Jere Frain laid out the city's first baseball diamond in the 1850s, The St. Louis Fairground (now Fairground Park) the site of annual St. Louis Agricultural and Mechanical Expositions where the first St. Louis Zoo (consisting of a monkey house, a carnivore house, a bear pit, and several other attractions) opened in 1876, Tower Grove Park, which had been donated to the city by Henry Shaw a scant nine years earlier, The Florissant Rail Road, a 16-mile narrow gauge passenger line that would open the following year and run between the intersection of Olive Boulevard and Grand Avenue in the city to St. Ferdinand Street in Florissant, Bridge, unlabeled but the only span crossing the Mississippi River, and Brooklyn, Illinois, the oldest incorporated African-American town in the United States which was founded in 1829 by "Mother" Priscilla Baltimore (who is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery). Bookplate and Henry Southeran's bookseller ticket to the pastedown. Darwin states in the opening pages to this comprehensive account: "During the summer of 1860, I was surprised by finding how large a number of insects were caught by the leaves of the common sun-dew (Drosera rotundifolia) on a heath in Sussex. I had heard that insects were thus caught, but knew nothing further on the subject." The book chronicles Darwin's experiments with various carnivorous plants, in which he carefully studied their feeding mechanisms Darwin tried several methods to stimulate the plants into activating their trap mechanisms, including feeding them meat and glass, blowing on them and prodding them with hair. He found that only the movement of an animal would cause the plants to react, and concluded that this was an evolutionary adaptation to conserve energy for prey and to ignore stimuli that were not likely to be nutritious. He also discovered that while some plants have distinct trap-like structures, others produce sticky fluids to ensnare their prey and concluded that this was an example of natural selection pressure resulting in various methods for food capture., John Murray, 1875, 0<
