Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a beautiful, sentimental handwritten journal of both popular and obscure 19th century (and earlier) poetry and quotations. This book was transcribed and organized by Sara Abigail Stone (later Carpenter) (1861-1942). She used her creation as a birthday book to track important dates in the lives of her family, friends and public figures. To learn more about Sara and the Stone and Carpenter families of Somerville, see BIO NOTES at the end of this listing. In the late 19th century, Sara took a blank book and created an entry for each day of the calendar year. Under each date, she hand wrote a quotation or poem that resonated with her. She then noted birthdays of people who were important to her under the poetry, simultaneously creating her own birthday book and anthology of literature. As an introduction to her book, she transcribed two poems on the first page: The Absent by Sara Louise Oberholtzer and Lifes Round by William Brunton. To close her book, after her December 31st entry, she transcribed the poignant 1891 poem by William Henry Channing, Youth and Age. Sara has done a lovely job of giving meaning to each day of the year through the words she selected. Some of her quotes and poems clear hat-tips to particular holidays, while others bear more subtle connection to the calendar day for which they were chosen. Some of her entries are as follows: If it is to be a Happy New Year to you you must be sure of making it a Happy New Year to someone else - S. J. Barrows [January 1st]. The wider the base of life, the higher we may expect to raise the summit [Birthdays: Emma Maria Stone, 1828 and Lydia E. Ring] [March 9th; Note that Emma is Saras mother]. Nay, tis the golden sunshine. There is naught That can withstand its gracious power. The winters reign is broken from this hour. And all its terrors are to nothing bought. O heat, my heart, greet though the opening year, Sing with the birds and make sweeter cheer. - John W. Chadwick [March 20th, Saras own birthday]. Aug 12 Honor and shame from no condition rise/Act well your part, there all honor lies - Abraham Pike [August 27th]. The belfries of all Christendom/Had rung so long the unbroken song/Of peace on earth, good will to men Oh the light and warmth and glory/Circling around the Christmas Eve! /Eastern tale or fairy story/Never could such magic weave - HW Longfellow [December 25th]. For a social or literary historian, this volume is a gorgeous, curated collection of poetry and quotations from the 19th century and earlier, as well as a glimpse into the mind of a well-educated 19th century womans taste in literature. It adds to the existing body of knowledge about prominent members of the Somerville community. BIO NOTES: Sara Abigail Stone (later Carpenter) of Somerville, Massachusetts, was the daughter of Jonathan and Emma (Cutter) Stone. Sara was an active member of the Somerville Historical Society and wrote several chapters in the Society's journal, Historic Leaves, which was published from 1903 until 1915. Saras older brother, Frederick W. Stone was a locally-prominent businessman and photographer who helped found the community's Savings Bank where he went on to work for the next 42 years. As an avid photographer he created a wonderful photographic record of Somerville and its people in the 19th century. In 1908, a 37-year-old Sara married 66-year-old Allen Francis Carpenter (1842-1923) , who owned and operated a grocery store in Somerville. Research has not uncovered any children born to the couple. This small book measures 8.0 inches by 6.5 inches and contains 108 pages. It is 72% complete. The cover is worn but still intact. The binding has come apart and the covers are barely attached. The thread binding the signatures is loose and a large number of pages have become detached. However, all pages are accounted for. There are line drawings pasted in to delineate each of the 12 months of the year. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 108 pages; Signed by Author ., 2, England, Belgium, 1946. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. An archive of 110 photographs, six diaries, two business cards, a fuel ration book, and a page of notes all housed in a small leather makeup case kept by a soldier electrician's wife during World War II. All items very good with curled edges on the photographs and some small tears and age toning. An archive of ephemera kept by an electrician, Arthur Charles Payne, serving with the British Liberation Army between 1943 and 1946. All the items were kept by his wife, "Kay (Kathleen)," after being sent the diaries and photos once they were completed and kept in a leather makeup case. The diaries begin in 1943 and are small daily "note-a-day" style books discussing the day to day of Payne's life in the army. Some of the diaries are dedicated to his wife and all of them request they be returned to his wife if found. Payne began his training at Bovington Camp in January of 1943 learning to repair tanks. The camp was used beginning in 1937 as a training facility for driving and maintenance. These entries discuss his early training as well as leaves taken, phone calls with Kay, and his daily life at the camp. A typical entry reads, "Practical test this morning. Disposal lecture 49.4%. 3rd class electrics recommended 2nd. Packing for my departure." An entry from March 1943 simply reads, "making arrangements for wedding" when he married Kay in London and they took a short honeymoon before he returned to his duties. The second diary continues into 1944 with similar entries discussing crashed planes, trips to the "pictures," and his work. A charming entry on September 5th reads, "Kathleen's birthday, my darling wife. Wherever I may be on this day I shall be thinking of her, loving her more and more - happy birthday. Many happy returns of the day my pet - I love you dearly." He was assigned to overseas duty in mid-1944 and the diary ends then with a note reading, "handing this diary over to my wife for safe keeping. If anything should happen to me all I have is her. I hope nothing will. I love her dearly, she is so sweet. May I come back for her sake. Love her, she does work too hard though. God bless her." A diary stamped "Agenda 1944" is hand titled "Souvenir of Watteren, Belgium British Liberation Army June 22nd 1944 to ---- West Yorkshire Regt 269 Forward Special Delivery Squadron." He begins, "our first sighting of France, smoldering buildings, some explosions from the shore, huge masses of ships on either side down the coast a little way battleships, bombarding shore batteries." Later he writes, "saw our first Jerry plane, heavy ack ack." Later he writes, "a dog fight overhead & ack ack fire, Jerry got away." Many of the entries discuss crashes, overhead dogfights, and the ever present ack ack fire. When he wasn't busy with the war he used his leisure time to go to the movies, write home, and play cards with other soldiers. Payne was in Belgium for the liberation and stayed through the rest of year and into 1945. Once the war was over Payne participated in the British Army of the Rhine which was involved in operations in occupied Germany. Most of the photographs featured here are from his time in Germany after the war which show uniformed men with Army equipment, refugees, and captured enemy equipment. Almost every photo is captioned in detail on the verso. Also included is a photograph of Kay encase in plastic with a dried four leaf clover, a lucky charm used by Payne during his tour of duty. An interesting collection of diaries and photographs detailing a British soldier's time during World War II., 1946, 4, Oblong Folio album (ca. 27,9x35,5 cm). 19 card stock leaves. With 40 mounted original gelatin silver photos with the larger ones from ca. 13,7x8,8 cm (5 ½ x 3 ½ in) to ca. 10,4x7 cm (4 x 2 ¾ in), the smaller ones from ca. 6x9,8 cm (2 ¼ x 3 ¾ in) to ca. 5x4 cm (2x 1 ½ in), and the other photos ca. 8,5x8,5 cm (ca. 3 ¼ x 3 ¼ in). Also, with eight real photo postcards from ca. 13,9x8,9 cm (5 ½ x 3 ½ in) to ca. 10,7x7,1 cm (4 ¼ x 2 ¾ in). About fifteen photographs and four real photo postcards addressed or captioned on the front or the verso. Period maroon full calf album fastened with a string; gilt-tooled ornaments and gilt-lettered generic title “Photographs” on the front board. The inner side of the front cover with a period white ink presentation inscription: “Happy Birthday Sister Ruth from Brother Harry. 12-21-.x” Binding rubbed on extremities, black ink and residue marks on the front board, several photos age-toned with corners chipped, but overall a very good album of strong interesting photos.Historically important private album documenting the early segregated lives of African American soldiers in WWII. The album was apparently compiled by Laura Darby Viges (1926/27-1985), her sister Ella Darby (1928-?), and her sister-in-law Helen Viges (1932-2015) of Eunice, St. Landry, Louisiana, in 1943-1946. The photographs primarily depict African American soldiers from the Viges and Darby families, along with their friends and other relatives, during and after WWII. Identified soldiers include Frank Viges (1922-2009), Henry Darby (1921-1997), Frank Darby (1925-2015), and his brother-in-law Corporal James “Jimmie” Ringo (1911-1960). While Ringo was part of the 24th Infantry Regiment (one of the Buffalo Soldier regiments), military insignias visible in photographs suggest the other men served in the segregated units of the United States Army Central, the Anti-Aircraft Command, and the 6th Armored Division.Racial discrimination in the U.S. Army was an official state policy between 1898 and 1948. Black Americans were segregated into separate military units, typically assigned labor-intensive roles with limited responsibility, issued less equipment, and rarely deployed overseas to restrict their frontline combat involvement. The album contains 40 original gelatin silver photographs and eight real photo postcards, most of which were likely taken at military bases and training camps across the U.S. About nineteen well-executed close-up studio portraits show “Frank Viges,” “James Ringo,” one “Floyd,” “Henry Darby,” “John W. H.,” and “Frank Darby,” along with their African American comrades and white commanding officer (possibly), either laughing or striking fierce poses with guns and clenched fists. A series of six lively vernacular photos capture a group of Black soldiers from the Civil Air Patrol repairing automobile engines, building wooden structures, and reading letters & newspapers. Especially notable are three rare photos of “Thomas Taylor Smith” cheerfully posing with other African American servicemen in postwar Japan. An excellent photo at the album's rear shows two black selectees in El Paso, Texas, boarding a train en route to Fort Benning’s primary infantry training center. The other interesting photos feature a newly-wed Black couple and African American soldiers smiling with white pals, posing with guns, etc. Overall, historically important album with original gelatin silver prints and real photo postcards documenting early racial segregation in the U.S. Army during WWII.Some of the captions include “The Tornado, the One + Only (Smile) / Laura Viges P. Box 319 Eunice Lo;” “To the one I love Miss Helen Viges, my love is for you only, John W. H. Killer Killer;” “For you Darling, from Frank Viges to Helen Viges;” “Listen tell me how are you getting along. I would like to know you are getting along girl… to Ella Darby;” “Miss Ella Darby love Floyd;” “My Dearest Darling Helen Viges you my darling + dearest (angel);” “To Laura Viges for our friendship … Lee;” “To my sister miss Helen Viges 1945;” “Chicko;” “Thomas Taylor Smith taken in Japan;” “El Paso Tex Enroute to Fort Benning.&rdquo, 0, 1927. A. Milne and English illustrator E. H. Shepard. The first collection of stories about the character was the book Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), and this was followed by The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included a poem about the bear in the children's verse book When We Were Very Young (1924) and many more in Now We Are Six (1927). All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard. The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, including Alexander Lenard's Latin translation, Winnie ille Pu, which was first published in 1958, and, in 1960, became the only Latin book ever to have been featured on The New York Times Best Seller list.In 1961, Walt Disney Productions licensed certain film and other rights of Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh stories from the estate of A. A. Milne and the licensing agent Stephen Slesinger, Inc., and adapted the Pooh stories, using the unhyphenated name "Winnie the Pooh", into a series of features that would eventually become one of its most successful franchises. In popular film adaptations, Pooh has been voiced by actors Sterling Holloway, Hal Smith, and Jim Cummings in English, and Yevgeny Leonov in Russian.Alan Alexander Milne; 18 January 1882 31 January 1956 was an English author, best known for his books about the teddy bear Winnie-the-Pooh and for various poems. Milne was a noted writer, primarily as a playwright, before the huge success of Pooh overshadowed all his previous work. Milne served in both World Wars, joining the British Army in World War I, and as a captain of the British Home Guard in World War IIHe was the father of bookseller Christopher Robin Milne, upon whom the character Christopher Robin is based. After graduating from Cambridge University in 1903, A. A. Milne contributed humorous verse and whimsical essays to Punch, joining the staff in 1906 and becoming an assistant editor.During this period he published 18 plays and three novels, including the murder mystery The Red House Mystery (1922). His son was born in August 1920 and in 1924 Milne produced a collection of children's poems, When We Were Very Young, which were illustrated by Punch staff cartoonist E. H. Shepard. A collection of short stories for children A Gallery of Children, and other stories that became part of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, were first published in 1925.Milne was an early screenwriter for the nascent British film industry, writing four stories filmed in 1920 for the company Minerva Films (founded in 1920 by the actor Leslie Howard and his friend and story editor Adrian Brunel). These were The Bump, starring Aubrey Smith; Twice Two; Five Pound Reward; and Bookworms. Some of these films survive in the archives of the British Film Institute. Milne had met Howard when the actor starred in Milne's play Mr Pim Passes By in London.Looking back on this period (in 1926), Milne observed that when he told his agent that he was going to write a detective story, he was told that what the country wanted from a "Punch humourist" was a humorous story; when two years later he said he was writing nursery rhymes, his agent and publisher were convinced he should write another detective story; and after another two years, he was being told that writing a detective story would be in the worst of taste given the demand for children's books. He concluded that "the only excuse which I have yet discovered for writing anything is that I want to write it; and I should be as proud to be delivered of a Telephone Directory con amore as I should be ashamed to create a Blank Verse Tragedy at the bidding of others." Ernest Howard Shepard OBE MC (10 December 1879 24 March 1976) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is known especially for illustrations of the anthropomorphic animal and soft toy characters in The Wind in the Willows and Winnie-the-Pooh.Shepard was born in St John's Wood, London. Having shown some promise in drawing at St Paul's School, in 1897 he enrolled in the Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea. After a productive year there, he attended the Royal Academy Schools, winning a Landseer scholarship in 1899 and a British Institute prize in 1900. There he met Florence Eleanor Chaplin, whom he married in 1904. By 1906 Shepard had become a successful illustrator, having produced work for illustrated editions of Aesop's Fables, David Copperfield, and Tom Brown's Schooldays, while at the same time working as an illustrator on the staff of Punch. The couple bought a house in London, but in 1905 moved to Shamley Green, near Guildford.Shepard was a prolific painter, showing in a number of exhibitions. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birminghama traditional venue for generic paintersas well as in the more radical atmosphere of Glasgow's Institute of Fine Arts, where some of the most innovative artists were on show. He was twice an exhibitor at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, one of the largest provincial galleries in the country, and another at the Manchester Art Gallery, a Victorian institution later part of the public libraries. But at heart, Shepard was a Londoner, showing sixteen times at the Royal Academy on Piccadilly. His wife, who was also a painter, found a home in London's West End venue for her own modest output during a 25-year career. In his mid-thirties when World War I broke out in 1914, Shepard received a commission as a second lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, an arm of the Royal Artillery. He was assigned to 105th Siege Battery, which crossed to France in May 1916. and went into action at the Battle of the Somme.By the autumn of 1916, Shepard started working for the Intelligence Department sketching the combat area within the view of his battery position. On 16 February 1917, he was made an acting captain whilst second-in-command of his battery, and briefly served as an acting major in late April and early May of that year during the Battle of Arras before reverting to acting captain. He was promoted to substantive lieutenant on 1 July 1917. Whilst acting as Captain, he was awarded the Military Cross. His citation read:For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As forward Observation Officer he continued to observe and send back valuable information, in spite of heavy shell and machine gun fire. His courage and coolness were conspicuous.Later in 1917 105th Siege Battery participated in the final stages of the Battle of Passchendaele where it came under heavy fire and suffered a number of casualties. At the end of the year it was sent to help retrieve a disastrous situation on the Italian Front, travelling by rail via Verona before coming into action on the Montello Hill.Shepard missed the Second Battle of the Piave River in April 1918, being on leave in England (where he was invested with his MC by King George V at Buckingham Palace) and where he was attending a gunnery course. He was back in Italy with his battery for the victory at Vittorio Veneto. After the Armistice of Villa Giusti in November 1918, Shepard was promoted to acting major in command of the battery, and given the duty of administering captured enemy guns. Demobilisation began at Christmas 1918 and 105th Siege Battery was disbanded in March 1919.Throughout the war he had been contributing to Punch. He was hired as a regular staff cartoonist in 1921 and became lead cartoonist in 1945. He was removed from this post in 1953 by Punch's new editor, Malcolm Muggeridge. His work was also part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics.Shepard was recommended to A. A. Milne in 1923 by another Punch staffer, E. V. Lucas. Milne initially thought Shepard's style was not what he wanted, but used him to illustrate the book of poems When We Were Very Young. Happy with the results, Milne then insisted Shepard illustrate Winnie-the-Pooh. Realising his illustrator's contribution to the book's success, the writer arranged for Shepard to receive a share of his royalties. Milne also inscribed a copy of Winnie-the-Pooh with the following personal verse:When I am gone,Let Shepard decorate my tomb,And put (if there is room)Two pictures on the stone:Piglet from page a hundred and eleven,And Pooh and Piglet walking (157)And Peter, thinking that they are my own,Will welcome me to Heaven.Eventually Shepard came to resent "that silly old bear" as he felt that the Pooh illustrations overshadowed his other work.Shepard modelled Pooh not on the toy owned by Milne's son Christopher Robin but on "Growler", a stuffed bear owned by his own son. (Growler no longer exists, having been given to his granddaughter Minnie Hunt and subsequently destroyed by a neighbour's dog.) His Pooh work is so famous that 300 of his preliminary sketches were exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1969, when he was 90 years old.A Shepard painting of Winnie the Pooh, believed to have been painted in the 1930s for a Bristol teashop, is his only known oil painting of the famous teddy bear. It was purchased at an auction for $243,000 in London late in 2000. The painting is displayed in the Pavilion Gallery at Assiniboine Park in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the city after which Winnie is named.Shepard wrote two autobiographies: Drawn from Memory (1957) and Drawn From Life (1961).In 1972, Shepard gave his personal collection of papers and illustrations to the University of Surrey. These now form the E.H. Shepard Archive.Shepard was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 1972 Birthday Honours.PLEASE SEE F.B.A.s historic child bear found in Artifactshttps://www.f-b-a.com/product/baby-brown-bear/, 1927, 3, Paris, 1990. [ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Original portrait of Nicolas de Staël signed by Denise Colomb Silver pint portrait of Nicolas de Staël by Denise Colomb. Later print made by the photographer in the 1990s from her 1954 negatives. Signed by Denise Colomb in the lower right-hand corner. On the back: ""N. D. Denise Colomb 7-5-2000 Happy birthday Serge, I'll be thinking of you on May 9). An exceptional picture of the painter, eyes lost in the distance, in his Parisian atelier rue Gauguet one year before his death. Sitting in front of one of his works, we see the piling up of the painter's canvases in the room behind him. The photograph was taken by Denise Colomb, great portraitist of the 20th century, known for her portraits of Antonin Artaud, Giacometti, Picasso, Soulages and Miro in their studio. ""It is said that his workshop was the cave of a palaeontological potter. With sediment, layers of paleo... A crucible, a large material well, riddled with pigments, paintbrushes, pots of plastered trowels, buckets, rags. In a strong smell of turpentine. A workshop covered, soiled, stained with dirt, with masonry clay. Its wingspan, its strength, its topsail height springs into this crater of Vesuvius. Slightly disoriented, he leans, he pours. To paint, for him, is to be prey to vertigo, to unpredictable, accidental, chance junctions. (Patrick Grainville, Les Yeux de Milos)., 1990, 5, Hachette Livre (Acc). New. 2010.
