Full signature and he dated it " May 23 - 73", so not long after publication. 303 page hardcover in an attractive/durable full-cloth binding with gold stamping on a field of brown on spine and front. The book includes a large group of captioned pictures (including one with Lady Bird Johnson and another with Adlai Stevenson) and an Index. "Out of the ashes of the 1929 stock market crash - through the fire of designing and building the Chicago 'Century of Progress' fair in 1933 with wallboard and cold-water paint - Louis Skidmore and Nat Owings created a new form of architectural firm and proceeded to guide it through long, troubled years. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill revolutionized 'downtown' with Manhattan's Lever House, built the controversial Air Force Academy, planted that secret 'new town,' Oak Ridge. Thus part of this book is an informal and irreverent history of the firm's growth. Another part gives the lively inside story of reshaping Washington, D.C.'s 'Avenue of the Presidents' under three administrations, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon - dealing with famous clients like Rockefeller, Weyerhaeuser, H.J. Heinz, Zellerbach - coping with powers and politicians. Very nice copy: spine square, boards have VERY minor browning at lower edge else the book is in excellent condition with NO markings throughout. The dj has a little rubbing, some bumping/couple tiny tears at head/heel of spine, corners have a little bumping/wear, one closed tear at upper edge of back flap, a little creasing/wear at upper edge, a few inner tape reinforcements. Otherwise it's in excellent condition, also, and attractive. NOT an ex-library, NOT a book club, NOT a remainder, dj NOT price-clipped ("$8.95").
