Beside the hints already given, for the prevention of this mischief, we learn from M. dc Erkenfels, a German writer, that trees may be effectually secured frotn their depredations, by anointing the bark in autumn, several feet high, with hogs-lard, and sometimes also besmearing them with ox-gall. Another remedy, which appears to be more efficacious, and salutary rather than hurtful to the vegetation of the tree, consists in scattering occasionally small quantities of soot round the stem: this expedient has for many years been successfully practised in Scotland. In order to prevent hares from devouring the young cabbage or brocoli, and other succulent plants, it has been recommended to dip their roots in the following preparation, before they are transplanted; Take the parings of old cheese, soak (hem in water, and preserve it till spring: then stir into the liquor such a quantity of clay as will form a pulpy mass. We have had no experience of this medication; though it is affirmed, that it not only secures the future plants from the attacks of hares, but its exhalations are so abnoxious to those depredators, that they will not frequent gardens where vegetables thus prepared are growing. With regard to its physical properties, the flesh of hare is more palatable in winter; and those bred in elevated countries are most esteemed. Nor should this animal be chased till it drops; for thus the flesh is rendered less digestible, and less wholesome: in other respects, its qualities are similar to those of Drer. First, as regards the patient, he should be told precisely, beforehand, what he is to expect, and what he is expected to do. Let him listen to the electric signal, and, by a few preliminary trials, accustom him to respond quickly thereto. Instruct him to keep his finger on the contact breaker at slight tension so that no time be, lost in breaking circuit. In certain subjects it is needful to insist frequently upon keeping the attention on the bell and responding as quickly as possible. The room where such observations are carried on should be as absolutely quiet as practicable; voices in conversation, the chiming of a clock, the bark of a dog, movements of others in the same room, objects passing to and fro within the field of vision, such as birds in a cage, will utterly vitiate the results obtained in many of this class of patients. If such accidental circumstances intervene, the register shonld be regarded as doubtful or discarded. So vagrant becomes the attention of many from visual impressions, that it is occasionally necessary, when testing the reaction to acouBtic stimuli, to blindfold the eyes, and it is equally essential, when testing the reaction to visual stimuli, to maintain the most absolute silence. Each case must be treated on its own merits, but it is often fatal to our results to arouse by any stray remark the slightest emotional disturbance in our patients; in fact, the attention should be directed solely to the experiments in hand. The operator and assistant should remain quite immobile whilst the signal is being awaited.
