The oppression, anxiety, palpitations, and agitation observed on the third, fourth, and fifth days of measles, do not require general or local bleeding, unless those symptoms evidently depend on acute laryngitis, intense pneumonia, or very extensive bronchial affection. In all other circumstances venesection might be injurious by disturbing the regular course of the disease, rendering the eruption less abundant, and the crisis less decided. When practitioners refrain from blood-letting, they often see the oppression, anxiety, and difficulty of breathing subside after the eruption has made its appearance, in a i regular manner. I am bound to add, that the local j or general bleedings practised by Rhazes ad deli-j quium, and more moderately by Mead and Selle, have not so marked and so beneficial an effect on the inflammatory morbillary affections of the air passages in measles, as in inflammations of the same! organs, produced by cold or any other cause not of a specific character. Should the eruption suddenly disappear, we must endeavour to ascertain if that is caused by any sudden augmentation of internal inflammation, convulsions, or if such an accident arise from the impression of cold. In the first case, the complication must be met directly, and treated in the usual way; in the latter, the patient must be plunged into a warm bath, or have a succession of hot cloths applied to the chest and extremities, with a view to excite perspiration and recal the eruption: if t. . .
