Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, Randläsuren, Fleck auf Buchdeckel, Kopfschnitt leicht angegraut, innen sauber / dust jacket rubbed, edge wear, stain on cover, top edge slightly grayed, clean inside. - The Poetic Structure of the World is a major reconsideration of a crucial turning point in Western thought and culture: the heliocentric revolution of Copernicus and Kepler. Fernand Hallyn treats the work of these two figures, not in terms of a history of science or astronomy, but as events embedded in a wider field of images, symbols, texts and practices. These new representations of the universe, he insists, cannot be explained by recourse to explanations of "genius" and "intuition." Instead, Hallyn investigates the cultural problem of how new scientific hypotheses are actually formed and why certain facts and not others are used in support of a particular theory. He contends that the scientific imagination is not fundamentally different from a mythic or poetic imagination and that the work of Copernicus and Kepler must be examined on the level of rhetorical structure. Thus the sun-centered universe is shown to be inseparable from the aesthetic, epistemological, theological and social imperatives of both Neoplatonism and Mannerism in the sixteenth century. Hallyn contends that during this period closely related notions of harmony, symmetry and proportion informed cosmology, music theory and the representation of the human body. This book will be of central concern to anyone interested in the history of European thought, art, literature, religion and science. / Contents Introduction Part One Copernicus or the Renaissance of the Cosmos I Science and Irony II Science and Anagogy III "The Principal Consideration."
