By arrangement with Platt & Munk Co., Inc. Watty Piper was a pen name of Arnold Munk ( - 1957), an owner of the publishing firm Platt & Munk. Arnold Munk was born in Hungary and, as a child, moved with his family to Chicago. He later moved to New York, where he died in 1957. Arnold Munk used the name Watty Piper as both an author of children’s books and as the editor of many of the books that Platt & Munk published. In 1930 Platt & Munk published 'The Little Engine that Could' - a story that had been circulating as a kind of American fairytale since the early 1900s, inspiring children to believe in themselves with the motto, "I think I can." In 1954, Platt & Munk published another version of The Little Engine That Could, with slightly revised language and new, more colorful illustrations by George and Doris Hauman. George Hauman (1890 - 1961) and Doris Holt Hauman (1898 - 1984) were American illustrators of children's books. "It was the work of George and Doris Hauman that earned The Little Engine the title of being worthy to sit on the same shelf as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Namely, the title was one of 17 that received the inaugural Lewis Carroll Shelf Awards in 1958. Unpaginated. Small inscription on title page dated 1980.
