Alexander Pope - Livres de poche

1993, ISBN: 9780571230709

Edition reliée, ID: 456514089

New York, NY, U.S.A.: Barnes & Noble, 1993. Fourteenth printing. Black boards, black cloth spine wrap, gilt spine titles, lt. shelf wear. Pages fine. Dj fine, protected in new, clear sleeve. Very attractive. Several photo plate sections. The Roman Catholic Church has been in existence for two millennia and this institutional longevity is all the more remarkable given that a number of its leaders were, frankly, bad. Let yourself be swept up by this colorful, panoramic story of seven men who ruled the Church of Rome at seven critical periods in the 600 years leading up to the Reformation. During this age of grandeur and corruption, popes led armies, made love and war, conspired for power, and armed themselves with the techniques of assassination and seduction while clothed with the authority of the Church. Dramatic accounts of these papal bad boys include: Urban VI, the wild man from Naples, whose grotesque savageries widened and maintained the scandalous gap of the Great Schism; Alexander VI, who brought to the See of Peter the intrigues of the Borgia; and Clement VII, the unskillful fox, whose fall brought down Rome itself. Profusely illustrated with architectural photographs and contemporary art from both Catholic and Protestant sources, this absorbing work vividly depicts the ecclesiastical corruptions which changed the course of history. 310 pages.. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book., Barnes & Noble, 1993, Paperback. New. In this series, a contemporary poet selects and introduces a poet of the past. By their choice of poems and by the personal and critical reactions they express in their prefaces, the editors offer insights into their own work as well as providing an accessible and passionate introduction to some of the greatest poets of our literature. Alexander Pope (1688-1744) was an essayist, critic, satirist, poet and translator. He published An Essay on Criticism in 1711 and a republished version of The Rape of the Lock in 1714. His Collected Works were published in 1717 and he translated the Iliad and the Odyssey into English. The Dunciad (1728), one of his most famous works, was a vicious satire on Dullness featuring many of his contemporaries.

Alexander Pope: Poems - livre d'occasion

ISBN: 9780571230709

ID: 2103558

Though critical opinion on Alexander Pope has frequently been divided, he is now regarded as the most important poet of the early eighteenth century. An invalid from infancy, he devoted his energies towards literature and achieved remarkable success with his first published work at the age of twenty-one. A succession of brilliant poems followed, including An Essay on Criticism (1711), Windsor Forest (1715), and his masterpiece, The Rape of the Lock. A second period of great poetry was begun in 1728 with the appearance of the first Dunciad. All these works--which exhibit Pope's astonishing human insight, his wide sympathies, and powers of social observation (displayed to greatest effect in his talent for satire)--are included in this selection of his poetry. It has been compiled by the distinguished Pope scholar and editor Pat Rodgers, who also provides an indispensable introduction that offers a new interpretation of Pope's poetry, and the philosophical ideas behind it.
