Faint external shelfwear, some light creases to upper outer corner of front cover, a hint of rubbing. Spine is unbroken with tiny wrinkles to front corners (else uncreased). --- The main purpose of this study is to present the Muslim image of the world from the geographical point of view in the fields of cartography and cosmography, as well as geography, emerging from medieval Muslim sources. The author's aim is also to explore the links between Muslim thought in general and the geographical data in order to show how the Muslims integrated Islamic and geographical concepts to create a general and unified vision of the world. The Muslim image of the world is treated as a product of geographical science, and not merely as a product of religion. Thus, in addition to the chapters on the influence of Islam on geography, the main body of the text examines aspects of the image of the earth, oceans, seas, islands, rivers, and mountains. The study is based on a vast collection of original material covering a period from the 9th century and extending beyond the Middle Ages, through to the 17th century. It is almost entirely composed of oriental manuscript sources of Eastern origin, some hitherto unpublished, and, not restricted only to geographical and cosmographical works, comprises historical and literary writing, as well as marvel books and dictionaries. The text is illustrated by a few diagrams and maps. Some of them have been drawn from old Muslim geographical and cosmographical volumes, while others, especially the maps, have been compiled with reference to these sources. The rich Muslim intellectual heritage in the fields of cosmography, itinerary and astronomy contains a great number of works which preserve the ancient knowledge of such civilizations as the Greek, Roman, Persian, and Indian. Analogically, Muslim geography achieved its significance and intellectual maturing while embracing the ancient traditions of both the East and the West. Dr Ahmad Nazmi is assistant professor in the Oriental Institute of Warsaw University.
