Wiley-Blackwell. Paperback. Good. Ships with Tracking Number! INTERNATIONAL WORLDWIDE Shipping available. May not contain Access Codes or Supplements. Buy with confidence, excellent customer service!, Wiley-Blackwell, De Gruyter Mouton, 2009. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. This is the first volume of a two-volume work summarizing the current state of scientific knowledge and problems of Slavic linguistics regarding (in this volume) synchronic and (in the second volume) diachronic descriptions of the structures and functions of the Slavic languages. It addresses both the traditional fields of research in Slavic languages--phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon--as well as more recent areas of interest such as semantic theory, textual linguistics, speech act theory, and discourse linguistics. For the method of description, they editors have chosen to follow the principles of an exemplary and contrastive-typological description, meaning that language categories, problem areas, and collected data are described independently from their typological relevance, functional capacity, and developmental dynamics in the respective Slavic language and no attempt is made for a complete description of all levels of linguistic description or categories in all individual Slavic languages. Rather, the structures, history, and investigation of all Slavic languages are explored through examples and contrasting types. An attempt has been made to treat all Slavic languages equally, rather than allowing Russian to dominate. About half the material is presented in German and half in English. (2009 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR), De Gruyter Mouton, 2009
