This edition before Marden expanded it into two volumes (1911). Suffering unbelievable circumstances early on, Marden came across a copy of Samuel Smiles's Self Help and was determined to overcome, and succeed, and brought to this goal "remarkable energy and unbroken achievement. By his early thirties he had earned academic degrees in science, arts, medicine and law. During his college years he supported himself by working in a hotel and afterward by becoming the owner of several hotels and a resort. He remained a successful hotel owner till his early forties, began a well-known magazine called SUCCESS, and even as an adult overcame misfortunes of mythical proportion -- in a famous incident, he lost to a hotel fire the entire manuscript to this book, and before the ashes had cooled, bought a notebook and began writing down from memory what was to be this, his foundational work. A book of inspiration and encouragement to all who are struggling for self-elevation along the paths of knowledge and of duty. The author was ahead of his time in many respects, but then he will make a reference, such as "how shameful it is that women can't vote" reminding you that this book was written well over 100 years ago. Marden also wrote "Architects of Fate, or Steps to Success and Power", "Peace, Power, and Plenty," and "Every Man a King." William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as England's Prime Minister William Gladstone, praised the book. People like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone and J. P. Morgan cited it as inspiration. Portraits include: Lincoln,Napoleon, Franklin, Bismarck; Harriet Beecher Stowe, James Watt; Francis Parkman, John Quincy Adams, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Madame de Stael, Sir Humphry Davy, Horace Greeley, George Peabody, William Lloyd Garrison, Professor S.F.B. Morse, George Washington, Galileo Galilee, Henry Ward Beecher, General Robert E. Lee, General Ulysses S. Grant, Charles Robert Darwin, William Ewart Gladstone, David Glasgow Farragut, Daniel Webster., Houghton Mifflin Company, 1897, New York, NY, U.S.A.: Library of America, The, 1997. Writings Library of America - 9781883011239 - edition reliée, livre de poche

1997, ISBN: 9781883011239

[ED: Hardcover / gebunden], [PU: Library of America], Gathers letters, journal excerpts, orders, and addresses from each part of Washington's life and political career This one-volume collection - the most extensive and authoritative ever published - covers five decades of Washington's astonishingly active life and brings together over 440 letters, orders, addresses, and other writings. Among the early writings included are the journal Washington kept at age 16 while surveying the Shenandoah Valley frontier and his dramatic account of the winter journey he made through the Pennsylvania wilderness in 1753 while on a diplomatic mission. Some two dozen letters written during the French and Indian War, including first-hand accounts of the controversial forest skirmish that began hostilities and of Braddock's bloody defeat, record Washington's early encounters with the harsh challenges of military command. An extensive selection of letters, orders, and addresses from the Revolutionary War record Washington's determined leadership of the Continental Army through years of defeat and deprivation. Letters from the Confederation period (1783-1789) show Washington's pleasure at returning to Mount Vernon, his continued interest in Western land speculation and river navigation, his growing concern with the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, and his role in the framing and ratification of the Constitution. The writings from his two terms as president show how Washington strove to establish enduring republican institutions, to build public trust in the new government, to avoid the divisions of party and faction, and to maintain American neutrality during the war between Britain and Revolutionary France. Also included in the volume are letters revealing his close and careful management of Mount Vernon and his evolving attitudes toward slavery., DE, [SC: 0.00], Neuware, gewerbliches Angebot, Hardcover / gebunden, 1149, [GW: 748g], offene Rechnung (Vorkasse vorbehalten), sofortueberweisung.de, Selbstabholung und Barzahlung, PayPal, Lastschrift, Banküberweisung, Interntationaler Versand
