University of Oklahoma Press. Paperback. 0806118881 Book Description In 1906 when the Creek Indian Chitto Harjo was protesting the United States government's liquidation of his tribe's lands, he began his argument with an account of Indian history from the time of Columbus, "for, of course, a thing has to have a root before it can grow." Yet even today most intellige nt non-Indian Americans have little knowledge of Indian history and affairs those lessons have not taken root. This book is an in-depth historical survey of the Indians of the United Sta tes, including the Eskimos and Aleuts of Alaska, which isolates and analyze s the problems which have beset these people since their first contacts wit h Europeans. Only in the light of this knowledge, the author points out, ca n an intelligent Indian policy be formulated. In the book are described the first meetings of Indians with explorers, the dispossession of the Indians by colonial expansion, their involvement in i mperial rivalries, their beginning relations with the new American republic , and the ensuing century of war and encroachment. The most recent aspects of government Indian policy are also detailed the g ood and bad administrative practices and measures to which the Indians have been subjected and their present situation. Miss Debo's style is objective, and throughout the book the distinct social environment of the Indians is emphasized-an environment that is foreign to the experience of most white men. Through ignorance of that culture and li fe style the results of non-Indian policy toward Indians have been centurie s of blundering and tragedy. In response to Indian history, an enlightened policy must be formulate . Very Good., University of Oklahoma Press, Algonquin Books. Paperback. 1565124375 Book Description Even in this candidly confessional age, we've been conditioned to avoid dis cussions of death. Our youth-worshipping culture does everything to deny de ath, which is why, when the end nears, most of us are inadequately prepared to deal with it. And the cost of that is great: many are haunted by memories of how inapprop riately or painfully or uncomfortably their parents and grandparents died. Many of us avoid even considering the options, in all their complexity, tha t we will most likely face one day, given our new longevity and the profoun d advances in medicine. With its wise and very compelling argument that all of us, at any age, can and should face death before it faces us, Talking About Death addresses the cultural, personal, medical, and legal concerns that are necessary for us- -as individuals and as a society--to prepare for a good death, a death wher e the dying are in control and not, as is too often the case, caught in a d ownward spiral of medical intervention and misunderstood intentions. Virginia Morris skillfully weaves together personal stories and practical m atters, scientific fact and spiritual sensitivity into an important book ab out how we can achieve a greater sense of peace in dying, and rediscover th e art of living.
