WITHOUT SANCTUARY: LYNCHING PHOTOGRAPHY IN AMERICA - Rare Pristine Copy of The First Limited Edition - Première édition

2000, ISBN: 0944092691

Edition reliée, ID: 3190797346

[EAN: 9780944092699], Gebraucht, wie neu, [PU: Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 2000], History|United States|General, Photography|Collections, Catalogs, Exhibitions, Social Science|Discrimination & Race Relations, Social Science|Ethnic Studies|African-American Studies, Jacket, 1st Printing. 212 pages. Published in 2000. Collection of "found" and "collected" photographs. One of the greatest photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The true First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. This edition also comes with a blood-red band, specially created for the inaugural exhibition in New York in 2000, which does NOT come with most copies of the First Edition. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Arlyn Nathan and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Maroon cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Vintage photographs selected by the editors. Edited by James Allen with contributions by some of America's leading scholars, historians, and photography experts. Red wraparound band. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with large flaps and white titles on the spine, as issued. Presents "Without Sanctuary". The single most harrowing and compelling photographic document on one of the most shameful chapters in American history. The only poignant thing about this book is its title. Upon its quiet release in 2000, the shock and horror that greeted the book in stores and online have been unprecedented. The publisher's blurb and collation of excerpted reviews are exceptionally telling: "In the years before federal anti-lynching laws were passed, an enthusiastic reign of racial terror swept through America. Many people today, despite the evidence, will not believe, do not want to believe, that such atrocities happened in America not very long ago. These photographs bear witness to an American Holocaust. An album of peacetime atrocities, during which hundreds of Kodaks clicked. These images refute the notion that photographs of charged historical subjects lose their power. Instead they send shock waves through the brain, implicating ever larger chunks of American society" (Publisher's blurb). The Tuskegee Institute has records of the lynching of 3, 436 blacks between 1882 and the 1950's. This is a small percentage of the actual number of murders that occurred, which were seldom reported and eventually led to the creation of the NAACP, an organization dedicated to passing federal anti-lynching laws. Through all this terror and carnage, someone, often a professional photographer, carried a camera and took pictures of the event for souvenir-keeping (rather than with an eye for posterity). The lynching photographs were made into postcards and sold briskly as souvenirs to the enthusiastic crowds in attendance. The photograph of two black men hanging from a tree surrounded by a large, all-smiles, all-white crowd is now considered among the most crucial images ever taken in the history of photography. A man is pointing an accusatory finger at the hanged men, as if to say, "This is the fate you blacks will meet and deserve". An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the First Limited Edition/true First Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Please note: This edition also comes with a blood-red band, specially created for the inaugural exhibition in New York in 2000, which does NOT come with most copies of the First Edition. Almost all copies available online are subsequent printings even if the dealers don't say so. A rare copy thus. 100 black-and-white photographic reproductions. "Without Sanctuary" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO "THE KILLING FIELDS" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0944092691.

[EAN: 9780944092699], Neubuch, [PU: Twin Palms Publishers, Santa Fe, New Mexico], History|United States|General, Photography|Collections, Catalogs, Exhibitions, Social Science|Discrimination & Race Relations, Social Science|Ethnic Studies|African-American Studies, Jacket, First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine maroon cloth, with title stamped in black on spine, with dust jacket. Edited by James Allen. Essays by James Allen, Hilton Als, Congressman, John Lewis and Leon F. Litwack. 212 pp. with 98 four-color plates. 10-1/4 x 7-7/8 inches. This first edition was limited to 4000 hardbound copies. Already in its tenth printing (nearly 50,000 copies sold).[Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. From the publisher: "The Tuskegee Institute records the lynching of 3,436 blacks between 1882 and 1950. This is probably a small [numhber] of these murders, which were seldom reported, and led to the creation of the NAACP in 1909, an organization dedicated to passing federal anti-lynching laws. Through all this terror and carnage someone-many times a professional photographer-carried a camera and took pictures of the events. These lynching photographs were often made into postcards and sold as souvenirs to the crowds in attendance. These images are some of photography's most brutal, surviving to this day so that we may now look back on the terrorism unleashed on America's African-American community and perhaps know our history and ourselves better. The almost one hundred images reproduced here are a testament to the camera's ability to make us remember what we often choose to forge."
