West of Darkness - Livres de poche

2016, ISBN: 9780888784025

ID: 878981009

Medford: Armchair Fiction, 2016. Trade paperback, The first novel, David H. Kellers The Flying Threat, is a story of science gone mad. It certainly parallels H. G. Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau, in that it features a small party of civilized people who are trapped in a far off, danger-filled land and faced with the terrifying threat of a mad scientist and his horrible monstrosities. It was also a most unusual tale for its time (1930) because it featured a lead female character who wasunlike the typical trembling beauties that filled the pages of the pulp magazines of the dayan intelligent, independent, strong-willed woman, unafraid to look adversity, even stark horror, straight in the eye without blinking. But if youre afraid of bugs (especially big ones!) dont read this story, because Dr. Keller has a field day slowly nurturing the terror of an army of giant insects that are soon to be unleashed upon an unsuspecting mankind. The second novel is The Fifth Dimension Tube by science fiction icon, Murray Leinster. It was an astonishing discovery. Professor Denham had reason to believe that travel to another universe was possible, the kind of travel which men had previously only dreamed of. But soon, by way of the Professors remarkable tube apparatus, Tommy Reames and the professors daughter, Evelyn Denham, invaded the inimical Fifth-Dimensional world of golden cities and tree-fern jungles and Ragged Men. This is a print-on-demand title., Armchair Fiction, 2016, Porcepic Books. Paperback. New. Paperback. 139 pages. Dimensions: 8.2in. x 5.4in. x 0.5in.Here, in a new edition reprint of John Bartons Archibald Lampman Award-winning classic, is a portrait in verse of the venerable and eccentric Emily Carr. Barton explores the West Coast landscape that was her inspiration with its cathedrals of cedars and the swirling skies of her own imagining. With an introduction by Kate Braid, author of To This Cedar Fountain, Bartons own artistry is made available to the host of fans it garnered on its original printing and to those legions which have followed his career for the last fifteen years. Emily Carr wrote in her journal in the early thirties: Avoid outrageousness and monstrosity. Be vital, intense, sincere. Distort if it is necessary to carry your point but not for the sake of being outlandish. Seek ever to lift the painting above the paint. Barton heeds her words, penning a fine literary work which is representational rather than documentary, impressionistic rather than exact, creating art that betrays the artist intact in spirit, fortitude and legacy.
