Enhancing Job Opportunities: Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union (Europe and Central Asia Reports) - Livres de poche

ISBN: 0821361953

[SR: 14110060], Paperback, [EAN: 9780821361955], World Bank Publications, World Bank Publications, Book, [PU: World Bank Publications], World Bank Publications, Enhancing Job Opportunities: Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union addresses why labor market outcomes have been disappointing during the transition and suggests policy interventions that can foster job creation and reduce unemployment. In many countries in the Region, productive job opportunities are scarce, despite the resurgence of economic growth. The book argues that the primary cause of this outcome is defensive enterprise restructuringenterprises are improving productivity largely by shedding redundant labor. For the creation of more and better jobs, enterprises should move towards strategic restructuring, so as to turn productivity gains into new investment and expansion. This shift from defensive to strategic restructuringas well as the creation of new activitiesrequires improvements in the investment climate. Governments need to remove key obstacles to firm entry, operation, and growth. The authors recommend that countries in the Region pursue a two-pronged strategy: first and foremost, lower the costs of doing business to encourage investment, firm growth, and job creation; and second, develop an adaptable labor market, where employers have incentives to hire and workers have incentives and skills to take available jobs., 2595, Labor & Industrial Relations, 2581, Economics, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10020683011, Human Resources, 10020684011, Conflict Resolution & Mediation, 2637, Human Resources & Personnel Management, 10020685011, Knowledge Capital, 3568203011, Outsourcing, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571267011, Asian, 11093, International & World Politics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571271011, European, 11093, International & World Politics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571261011, Labor & Industrial Relations, 5571258011, Specific Topics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10771, Social Policy, 5571275011, Public Affairs & Policy, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468220, Business & Finance, 491564, Accounting, 684243011, Banking, 491578, Business Communication, 684244011, Business Development, 491580, Business Ethics, 491506, Business Law, 491584, Economics, 684245011, Entrepreneurship, 491594, Finance, 491602, Human Resources, 684246011, International Business, 684247011, Investments & Securities, 684248011, Management, 491624, Marketing, 684249011, Real Estate, 684250011, Sales, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491474, Public Policy, 491464, Political Science, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

Détails sur le livre
Enhancing Job Opportunities: Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union
Auteur:

Rutkowski, Jan J.; Scarpetta, Stefano

Titre:

Enhancing Job Opportunities: Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union

ISBN:

0821361953

This title looks at ways governments can promote die creation of more and better jobs in the region. The book addresses the question as to why labor market outcomes have been disappointing during the transition and suggests policy interventions to promote firms' investment, job creation and economic development. This requires tacking different bottlenecks of the investment climate, ranging from high business risks and under developed institutions in the low income CIS countries, to poor governance and administrative barriers in middle income CIS and Southeastern Europe, to labor market rigidities and skill mismatch in Central and Eastern Europe.
