[SR: 4371148], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780802055217], University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, Book, [PU: University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division], University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, Erasmus was above all an educator, and his writings as a teacher and theorist give him a claim to be regarded as the greatest figure in the history of education since antiquity. By the decade of the i32os, he had become the leading spokesman for the cause of humanistic education in Europe. The five translations in Collected Works of Erasmus 23 and 26 reflect Erasmus' main ideas about education: concern for the most desirable and effective curriculum; the need to read and appreciate the best writings of the finest classical authors; the importance of well-trained, well-paid, competent, inventive, and compassionate teachers; practical advice on the temperament and conduct of parents; the provision of adequate education for women and mature students; in short, the development of a philosophy of education that would produce the kind of person best educated for the service of God and man.Contained in these volumes are the first modern English translations of De conscribendis epistolis I On the Writing of Letters, Conficiendarum epistolarum formula I A Formula for the Composition of Letters, De civilitate I On Good Manners for Boys, De pueris I A Declamation on the Subject of Early Liberal Education for Children, and De recta pronuntiatione I The Right Way of Speaking Latin and Greek A Dialogue. These works present Erasmus' educational program for children from the very young to pre-university age - a compendium of his views on the nature and value of a humanistic education that remains of importance for all times and places.Volumes 25 and 26 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series – Two-volume set., 10233, Medieval, 10225, Movements & Periods, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10240, Renaissance, 10225, Movements & Periods, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10159357011, Reference, 10204, History & Criticism, 17, Literature & Fiction, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11739, Literature, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11495, Foreign Language Dictionaries & Thesauruses, 11773, Foreign Language Study & Reference, 21, Reference, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11049, History & Surveys, 11019, Philosophy, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11072, Religious, 11019, Philosophy, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468236, Literature, 491406, American Literature, 491394, Creative Writing & Composition, 491408, English Literature, 491404, Literary Theory, 684272011, World Literature, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 468230, History, 491410, Africa, 684268011, Ancient, 491412, Asia, 491414, Europe, 491418, Latin America, 684269011, Middle East, 684270011, Military, 491422, United States, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491428, History & Surveys, 468232, Philosophy, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 684261011, Foreign Languages, 684262011, Chinese, 684263011, French, 684264011, German, 684265011, Italian, 684266011, Japanese, 684267011, Spanish, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 25th and 26th October, 2006. Cloth, 4to, mounted cover illustration, 28 cm,. 411 pp, plates (many in colour). Lots 2456-3076. From the introduction: "The earliest book in the sale is the first edition of the Latin translation of Plotinus by Ficino (1492, lot 2906), and there is one other incunable, the Florence c. 1496 edition of the Table of Cebes (lot 2551). The latest books are some editions of Hume from the 1750s and Wilkins's translation of the Bhagavadgita published in 1785, but these are by far the latest in date, and extremely unusual within the overall chronology of the library. The bulk of the books date from between about 1550 and 1720, and vary enormously both in size and importance...As usual, the spread of languages and places of printing is Europe-wide, and further. There are devotional works in Irish, theological works in Croat, books in Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Arabic and Persian, the Scandinavian, Baltic and Slavonic languages, and from outside Europe one book, the translation into the Algonquian tongue by John Eliot of Lewis Bayly's Practice of Piety (1665, lot 2481)...The greater part of the books in the sale are printed in England and most are in English. These vary from legal and philosophical texts to works such as a fine copy of the first English translation of Erasmus The Praise of Folly (lot 2646), and two separate editions of Sir Thomas Browne's Religio medici (lots 2520-2521), one the 'unauthorised' first edition, in a contemporary limp vellum binding, and with a provenance also found in one other volume, an unrecorded Sarum Hours (lot 2791). From European centres of printing we find a small number of books printed in Scandinavia and the Baltic, with two printed in Russia, as well as the more obvious cities of France, Germany, the Netherlands and Italy whence come the bulk of the books...As is well known the first Earl of Macclesfield was a lawyer, and it is in this part of the library that the substantial collection of law books is to be found, these books coming partly from him, and partly from his protege Sir Thomas Clarke (1703/4-1764). Covers a little rubbed and slightly marked, otherwise Very Good., Sotheby's, London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 25th and 26th October, 2006, 2006, VeryGood. 2-volume set, volumes 25 and 26 of the collected works of Erasmus. Dust jackets show minor wear. Pages are clean, text and pictures are intact and unmarred.
