New York, NY Clarkson Potter, 1988. Hardcover First Ed; First Printing indicated. Very Good+: shows indications of very careful use: shows only the mildest rubbing; the front pastedown endpaper shows the bottom portion torn, obscuring a 2" x 3" section of the design; the binding shows barely discernible lean, while remaining perfectly secure; text clean. Clearly not free of flaws, but remains close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 112pp. Foreward by Sir Hugh Casson. Quarter cloth and Pictorial Paper over boards. Profusely illustrated in color. End Paper Maps. First Ed; later printing. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. This book had its origins in a sketchbook compiled over a period of 12 months by an English architect who had won a scholarship to the British School in Rome. Throughout her year in Italy, Caroline Maudit made expeditions into the countryside, visiting the buildings of the High Renaissance; exploring the architecture of Rome and later travelling to Tuscany, Umbria and the Palladian world of the Veneto. All over Italy she managed to persuade people to let her see many places not normally open to the public. Everywhere she went, she took her sketchbook along with a box of watercolours and a measuring tape and gradually the book filled up with her drawings, observations and impressions until by the end of the year, it was brimming with churches, villas, palaces, gardens and ruins. This work is a reproduction of the pages of Caroline's sketchbook, together with her own specially written commentary., Clarkson Potter, 1988., U.S.A.: Leisure Books, 1996. Mass Market Paperback. About this title: Pakistan and India are at war, and Pakistan is using American B-50s. The CIA wants them back before the world faces annihilation. "DeFelice never forgets that he is writing an action story." -The New York Times Two nations always on the verge of deadly conflict, Pakistan and India are heading toward a bloody war. And when the fighting begins, Russia and China are certain to enter the battle on opposite sides. "Good clean technofun!" - Kirkus Reviews Courtesy of the CIA, the Pakistanis have a secret weapon: upgraded and modified B-50s. Armed with nuclear warheads, the planes can be launched as war breakers to stem the tide of an otherwise unstoppable invasion. "DeFelice refreshes the genre." -Publishers Weekly The CIA has to get the B-50s back. But the only man who can pull off the mission is Michael O'Connell- an embittered operative who was kicked out of the agency for knowing too much about the unsanctioned delivery of the bombers. And if O'Connell fails, nobody can save the world from utter annihilation. From Publishers Weekly In DeFelice's tension-filled second novel (after Coyote Bird ) set in September 1997, the world stands on the brink of nuclear disaster. War has broken out between India and Pakistan. The CIA has recalled Michael O'Connel, expelled from the Company two years earlier for helping Pakistan design nearly undetectable nuclear bombers. Now he is rehired to destroy these refitted B-50s, known as the Golden Bears. In the process, O'Connell encounters international romance, adventure and political intrigue. Morena Kelso, a former lover now deputy head of South Asia for the CIA, is his second in command; his superior is Carl "The Snowman" Stockman, deputy director of operations. O'Connell has his own secret agenda, which includes getting one of the B-50s out of Pakistan and into Iran, where he plans to sell it to an unscrupulous arms dealer from his past. He crosses continents, flees a sniper attack in Paris and rescues the kidnapped U.S. Secretary of State in a high-powered assault. Aviation aficionados will be rewarded by detailed descriptions of airplane minutiae, a spiffy dogfight and a harrowing midair refueling procedure on a plane under Indian attack. The novel's climax pits O'Connel against his Pakistani counterpart, Major Syyid "Rocket" Khan, in a "close encounter of the high g kind" that will have readers of this suspenseful techno-thriller turning pages at a rapid pace. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From Library Journal It is 1997, and India has just invaded Pakistan. The Pakistani army is no match for the Indians, who threaten to overrun the country. Former CIA agent Michael O'Connell is persuaded to come back for one last assignment--retrieve or destroy three bombers he helped the Pakistanis build before they use them to drop nuclear bombs on India. With Greeley, a gone-to-seed pilot, O'Connell sneaks into India just as the U.S. Secretary of State is kidnapped while trying to negotiate a cease-fire between the two countries. After a hair-raising helicopter rescue, O'Connell flies the Secretary and his small force to the secret air base. Destroying two of the bombers, O'Connell and company escape with the third "war breaker." The author of Coyote Bird (St. Martin's, 1992), DeFelice has written a suspenseful novel filled with action scenes that will thrill Dale Brown fans. For all popular fiction collections. - Grant A.
