See photos for condition details. Hardcover, bluish green cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Exterior show spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. There's also some fraying present at the top of the spine. Both the front and rear pastedowns contain personal bookplate stating it was part of the private library of John A. Frichley, M.D. of Harrisburg PA. The front pastedown also contains a stamped signature as does the title page. The front and page contains his actual signature which also states he went to the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Frichley was an American physician and politician who served three terms as the mayor of Harrisburg PA. He had a rather colorful past:: Endorsed by the Harrisburg Patriot during the 1887 Harrisburg Mayoral Race he was hailed as a "young man of ability and integrity", he would eventually be found as responsible for missing government funds. From his first term, he established the Harrisburg Bureau of Police and ambulance services, but was reported as extorting speakeasies, gambling houses and brothels for police protection. Dr. Fritchey was also notable for providing illegal abortions, and women from out of town would ride the train into Harrisburg to receive the procedures in secrecy (from his Wikipedia page). The pages are toned due to age but appear clean other than handling wear and some minor spotting. One or two pages had corner folds in a few pages near the front had some light pencil X marks etc. which can be erased if desired. The front hinge appears good but the rear hinge is cracked. Binding is good at the text portion of the pages. A rather ordinary 19th-century book with an very interesting original owner. One of a series of pamphlets commemorating America's decisive victory over the British in 1815, this detailing the participation of some 800 Black troops in the battle, and the history of their regiments, formed of freemen and former slaves under the more liberal Spanish rule before 1803, and of the new American government's considerations over how to treat these troops: cynically, their patriotism was appealed to, and promises of land & pensions seem to have been little-honored after the war, despite their heroism in battle and Jackson's praise. Named to the New York Public Library's Best Books for the Teen Age 2006 As a tomboy growing up in Kansas, Amelia Earhart delighted in trying new and risky things, once even building a roller-coaster in her grandparents' backyard. In her 20s she fell in love with flight while watching an aerobatics exhibition and grew even more enthralled when she took her first airplane ride. At age 24 she earned her pilot's wings and 1928 took part in the transatlantic "Friendship" flight. Her willowy build, wholesome smile, and tousled blonde hair invited comparison to the celebrated pilot Charles Lindbergh, and "Lady Lindy" charmed the public with her unassuming manner. In 1937, Earhart wed publisher George Putnam, who managed her career and promoted her zealously, ensuring her status as the world's best-known aviatrix. The next year, she soloed the Atlantic, afterward receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and began championing the efforts of women throughout the world to explore careers--especially in aviation--traditionally held by men. Tragically, just days before her fortieth birthday, Earhart, her navigator Fred Noonan, and their plane vanished en route to tiny Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean as they neared the end of their round-the-world journey. President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the greatest land and ocean search ever undertaken but no trace of the missing flyers or their craft were ever found.
