"Pioneers of modern craft" profiles key figures in the history of contemporary twentieth-century crafts. It focuses on the lives and times of prominent individuals who were (or became) influential throughout the pre- and post-war periods in Britain, such as David Pye, Gerald Benney, Gerda Flockinger, Edward Barnsley and William Staite Murray. Based on a series of twelve lectures arranged by the Crafts Council between 1993 and 1995, this volume of essays demonstrates the burgeoning growth in the field of twentieth-century craft history as a subject for serious investigation. This collection will be of value to all those interested in the foundations and development of the crafts which have contributed so much to the vibrant nature of our visual environment in the late twentieth century: historians, lectures, students, makers, collectors, indeed, all those with an interest in the origin of contemporary craft objects. The contributors include Peter Dormer, Colin Banks, Oliver Watson, Mary Schoeser and Annette Carruthers. The twelve essays are representative of each of the enduring artistic craft disciplines: furniture and woodwork, metalwork, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and lettering and writing.
