Security and Progress: Lord Salisbury at the India Office (Contributions to the Study of World History) - edition reliée, livre de poche

ISBN: 0313317526

[SR: 7581349], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780313317521], Praeger, Praeger, Book, [PU: Praeger], Praeger, In the wake of the Indian Mutiny, the 1860s and 1870s marked an important period of change and imperial consolidation for the British. Here the author examines the imperial policies of Robert Cecil, the third marquis of Salisbury, who served as secretary of state for India for two administrations during this key era, which marked a significant turning point for relations with the local princes. Clearly defining the office of secretary of state, Salisbury was responsible for policies designed to ensure the smooth running of an empire whose administration was made more difficult by the British Parliament, which possessed the right to oversee Indian affairs. Hoping to prevent a frontier war, Salisbury stressed the importance of promoting progressive change in such a way as to avoid arousing Indian opposition. This conservative approach to Indian government was able to countenance radical ideas, but it did give rise to the hostility of Western-educated Indians who sought more say in the governing of India. At this time, their opposition lacked weight, but Salisbury warned of future dangers should the British fail to promote the welfare of the Indian peasant and to solve India's financial difficulties. Salisbury would carry with him ideas developed at this time to his future posts as foreign secretary and prime minister. Brumpton's study complements existing research into imperial ideology and the official mind of India under the British., 9332123011, Great Britain, 4948, England, 4974, Scotland, 4982, Wales, 4935, Europe, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5035, World, 15812171, Civilization & Culture, 3825131, Expeditions & Discoveries, 4992, Jewish, 11764653011, Maritime History & Piracy, 6343224011, Religious, 16244141, Slavery & Emancipation, 15812211, Women in History, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571267011, Asian, 11093, International & World Politics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571271011, European, 11093, International & World Politics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 491414, Europe, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491470, International Relations, 491464, Political Science, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

Greenwood, 2002. Hardbound. New Book. Hardbound. With new access to Lord Salisbury's private correspondence with officials in India, Brumpton (history, U. of Leeds, UK) studies the career of Robert Cecil, Marquis of Salisbury, who--as British secretary of state for India in the 1860s-70s--oversaw Indian affairs during a pivotal era of change. The author counters Cecil's daughter's characterization of this period in her father's life as ' "scarcely ... remunerative biographically." ' Following a biographical summary, he discusses the mediating role of the India Office in Anglo-Indian relations, crises and progress in managing Indian resources, and Anglo-Afghan relations relating to India's defense. Historians will find much to mine in Salisbury's radical thinking about balancing British empire interests with culturally respectful change under the Raj government.
