The Awkward Age in Women's Popular Fiction, 1850-1900: Girls and the Transition to Womanhood (Oxford English Monographs) - edition reliée, livre de poche

2004, ISBN: 0199272611

[SR: 1467598], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780199272617], OUP Oxford, OUP Oxford, Book, [PU: OUP Oxford], 2004-07-22, OUP Oxford, This book demonstrates that 'the awkward age' formed a fault-line in Victorian female experience, an unusual phase in which restlessness, self-interest, and rebellion were possible. Tracing evolving treatments of female adolescence though a host of long-forgotten women's fictions, the book reveals that representations of the girl in popular women's literature importantly anticipated depictions of the feminist in the fin de siecle New Woman writing; conservative portrayals of girls' hopes, dreams, and subsequent frustrations helped clear a literary and cultural space for the New Woman's 'awakening' to disaffected consciousness. The book thus both historicises the evolution and mythic appeal of the female adolescent and works to receive suggestive exchanges between apparently diverse female literary traditions., 512780, Women & Art, 91, Art, Architecture & Photography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772162, Cultural History, 772188, Local & Urban History, 772192, London, 271405, Multicultural History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 275080, Literary Studies, 275068, History & Criticism, 275389, Poetry, Drama & Criticism, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 277040, Reference, 496786, Linguistics, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 52, Young Adult, 5346594031, Action & Adventure, 5346475031, Art & Music, 280199, Biographies, 5346498031, Comics & Graphic Novels, 5346499031, Computers & Internet, 280219, Education & Reference, 280208, Historical Fiction, 5346569031, History, 280210, Horror, 280211, Literature & Fiction, 280217, Love & Romance, 280218, Mysteries & Thrillers, 5346606031, Personal Health, 280222, Religion & Spirituality, 5346621031, Science & Nature, 280229, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 280244, Social Issues, 280250, Sport & Outdoors, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
