A celebrity, he mingled as easily with sporting personalities as with notorious French avant-garde artists. He made a record-breaking balloon flight across the Channel in 1905 and led treks in the Sudan, Abyssinia and Indochina in 1906-08, but if Latham is remembered today, it is for having been Louis Blériot's unsuccessful rival for the honour of making the first powered-aeroplane flight across the English Channel in the summer of 1909.
