Fair trade is widely regarded as a universal good. This fascinating anthropological study takes a closer look at a coffee-farming community in Costa Rica and explores the contradictions and conflicts behind the fair trade movement.Western demands for organic fair trade produce can be met only by more affluent individuals with larger landholdings. This is the cause of resentment and ill feelings amongst the less privileged growers in the community. All growers are united in their criticism of the high margins accumulated by regional processors. Ultimately, fair trade can be as divisive as other forms of consumption and production. Sustainability, just rewards and social cohesion have formed part of the world view of these agricultural communities for centuries. This book shows how there is much common ground between the worlds of the commodity grower and the priorities of the fair trade movement, if not necessarily always in the ways we might suppose.
