Pressestimmen
An astute historical analysis and a hugely readable informative narrative about Wellington's life from a shy, indolent boy to commander in chief of the allied forces that defeated Napoleon. The Iron Duke is shown to be idealistic in politics, cynical in love, a wit and a man of enormous courage often sickened by war.
Synopsis
Richard Holmes, military historian and broadcaster, tells the story of one of Britain's greatest-ever soldiers, the man who posed the most serious threat to Napoleon. The author charts Wellington's military career from India to Europe, and in the process, rediscovers the reasons Queen Victoria called him the greatest man the 19th century had produced. Combining historical analysis with a semi-biographical examination of Wellington, Holmes illustrates the rapid evolution in military and political thinking of the time. Wellington is shown as a brilliant figure, idealistic in politics, cynical in love, a wit, a beau, a man of enormous courage often sickened by war. As Richard Holmes charts his progress from a shy, indolent boy to commander-in-chief of the allied forces, he also exposes the Iron Duke as a philanderer, and a man who sometimes despised the men that he led, and was not always in control of his soldiers.
Buchrückseite
In this compelling book and hugely popular accompanying BBC series Richard Holmes charts the extraordinary progress of Britain's greatest-ever soldier from the ruins of his family seat in Ireland to the plains of India, where Wellesley first gained his reputation as a brilliant and courageous commander, to the horrors of the Peninsular War and ultimately to Waterloo. Holmes excavates a brilliant figure, idealistic in politics, cynical in love, a wit, a beau, a man of enormous courage and iron duty often sickened by the horrors of war. However, Wellington's journey to greatness and recognition as the man who saved Europe from the tyranny of Napoleon, includes tales of philandering and exposes a man who sometimes despised the men he led, and was not always in control of them.THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON WAS NOT ALWAYS GOOD, BUT HE WAS UNQUESTIONABLY GREAT, AND THIS LIVELY AND INFORMED BOOK IS SOCIAL, MILITARY AND BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY AT ITS FINEST

Rezensionen:
"Eine spannende Biografie über den Helden von Waterloo mit all seinen Schwächen und Zweifeln. Ein Blick auf die britische Gesellschaft und ruhmreiche Armee des Empires, der die Zeit ebenso wie die Hauptfigur für heutige Leser zum Leben erweckt. Ein Musterbeispiel für die Könnerschaft britischer Historiker und Geschichtsautoren, die einen nicht mit akademischem Tonfall abschrecken sondern nicht mehr loslassen."
"An excellent primer about the life of Wellington.
I seem to be reading a lot of novels, at the moment, that are set against the backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars. Be it just a cameo appearance, or the central character The Duke of Wellington always makes an appearance. As a consequence I wanted to learn more about the real man.
Richard Holmes's book was set at the ideal level for me. Very easy to read, almost like a novel in its style of writing. There were times when I would not have been surprised had Richard Sharpe turned up. But it did achieve the goal of letting me know and understand the man better and that was all that I needed.
This maybe a little on the 'lite' side for the serious historian. But for somebody like myself, absolutely spot on."
"A short but informative biography of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. Clear and very readable giving a rounded picture of his life, personality, political career, relationships, women and of course the military. Very satisfying because it doesn't maximise the military and minimise everything else. Its brevity means it tends to give a generalised overview, but an overview like this is always the best place to start, and there are plenty of other books out there if you want fine detail. No-one these days can mention Wellesley without thinking of Richard Sharpe, and this brief biography is among the essential background for reading the Sharpe novels."
"I am a fan of Richard Holmes' books in general, but he surpassed himself with this one. This book gives an excellent overview of Wellington's life, covering all the main points without getting bogged down in minutiae. While the author makes no attempt to hide his admiration for his subject, he is not afraid to discuss Wellington's flaws as well as his strengths.
So, who is the audience for this book? First, anyone wanting a very accessible way to start learning about a figure who seems larger than life and therefore less easy to understand. Second, those who know about Wellington's most famous campaigns in Spain and France, but do not know much (if anything) his early military career in India, and later life in politics.
Very readable, and highly recommended."
"I had just read a gripping biography of Nelson which included a line about Wellington and Nelson' s only meeting, which inspired me to seek out more about Wellington. I wasn't disappointed. This is a pleasure to read, although it could have been a bit longer and more detailed."
