A woman of extraordinary artistic vision, photographer Diane (Nemerov) Arbus, b.1923, and husband Allan Arbus became partners in a fashion photography business, featured in Glamour magazine, 1947. She was raised pampered and isolated in the Russeks department store family of New York City's Fifth Avenue. Her brother was Howard Nemerov, a World War II RAF pilot, then with the 8th U.S. Army Airforce, each for 50-plus missions. Literary history recalls his poetry. In this first biography of Diane Arbus, she is described as being "possessed by visions", with a "dream of photographing everybody in the world". Her range included peace marches, art openings, portraits of celebrities. Then, encouraged by her teacher Lisette Model, pursued the "forbidden" with her camera: dwarfs, twins, transvestites, societies' "freaks". Arbus redefined both the normal and abnormal, with a new edgy photojournalism. Fears and anguish resurfaced. In 1971, she committed suicide, and soon became a cult figure.
