First edition of this biographical narrative of Hernando de Soto. Wilmer recounts De Soto's early expeditions with his father-in-law, Pedro de Avilas, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship, as well as his more famous North American expedition. Though De Soto travelled extensively through Central and South America, it is his discovery of the Mississippi River for which he is best known. De Soto landed on the west coast of Florida in 1539, marching north through Georgia and west to Mobile Bay. His party reached the Mississippi River in 1541 and went perhaps as far as the present Oklahoma-Arkansas border. Returning east, De Soto died and was buried in the Mississippi. FIELD 1685., J.T.
