England felt all the forces that pressed outward from the Old World. She became the target of the diplomatic intrigues of rival nations. Her own strength was concentrated as it had never been concentrated before. Every intelligent Englishman was thinking, as hard as if he were Elizabeth''s-prime minister, about England''s difficulties, and England''s hopes and fears.
