England felt all the forces that pressed outward from the Old World. She became the target of the diplomatic intrigues of rival nations. Her own strength was concentrated as it had never been concentrated before. Every intelligent Englishman was thinking, as hard as if he were Elizabeth''s-prime minister, about England''s difficulties, and England''s hopes and fears. The world of London was full of novelties--of men and things from strange countries; of ideas which had never occurred, at least in form so concrete, to anybody...
