An exceptionally well preserved copy of this important work collecting nineteen photographs of the Grand Canyon, taken by the pioneering photographers Ellsworth and Emery Kolb, who had a studio set up on the edge of the Grand Canyon. With an additional th An uncommon work. A beautiful collection of photographs looking at the Grand Canyon, photographed by two pioneering brothers. Illustrated with nineteen plates of monochrome photographs, and a mounted photograph to the front wrap. With an additional three colour plates loosely inserted. Published and photographed by the Kolb Brothers, Ellsworth and Emery, at the Kolb Studio. The studio is a historic structure on the edge of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The studio operated between 1904 to 1976. In 1911 they navigated the Colorado River successful, filming their journey. This navigation was what made them famous, as they set out with virtually no boating experience, spending four months in the deep river canyons. They had to navigate many large and small rapids. Not only did they survive this expolit, but they still managed to film to whole thing. That film went on to become the longest running movie in history, being shown in the studio until 1976. The brothers then spent almost eight decades explored and photographing the Grand Canyon. The photograph to the front wrap shows their daring attempts to take photographs, dangling from rope to try and take a photo. The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canon in Arizona. Historically, the canyon was carved by the Colorado River. Before becoming a tourist attraction, the canyon was inhabited by Native American, who built settlements in the canyon and in its caves. The first European known to have seen the canyon was Garcia Lopez de Cardenas in 1540. A beautiful collection of photographs looking at the Grand Canyon. In the original publisher's paper wraps. The color illustrated front and rear boards are are all there but are loose and faded and worn but in tact and very visible. The spine, itself, is still in tact, but in need of a new cover. There is a bold black ink owner's signature, Irwin Cunningham, on the front free flyleaf page. There are many photos by several photographers ie Peabody, Rose and Putnam & Valentine. There are numerous articles by Higgins, Powell, Lummis, Stoddard, Stanton, Harriet Monroe, Miller, Garland, Wm White, Gleed, Salisbury, Brigham, Moran, Jordan, Warner, "Fitz Mac," Beecher, and Ewing. There is a beautiful 7"X 9.5" full page color Map of Grand Canyon of Arizona signed on the top of the back page by Irwin E. Cunningham. I could not find one single copy of this particulae edition published by the Santa Fe R.R. who put numerous photos of the outside and inside of El Tovar Hotel, John Hance's Log Cabin, Hopi House Indian Curio Room, Bright Angel Camp, The Rendezvous, Main Dining Grand View Hotel and Annex, Coconino Forest near Point Sublime. I have circled Grand Canyon in several trips including the North and South Rim. THE OUTSIDE BOARDS ARE JUST GOOD, THE SPINE IS POOR, BUT THE INSIDE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. I HAVE SEARCHED ABEBOOKS AND COULD NOT FIND ONE SINGLE COPY OF THIS PARTICULAR BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1906 BY SANTA FE R.R., Books<
