Edition reliée, ID: 436235646

Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 1995. First edition. Hardcover. New. 16 x 24 cm. Caste and Capitalism in Colonial India presents an anthropological and historical challenge to the traditional assumptions about kinship, caste, and commercial organizations in South Asia. Focusing on the Nattukotai Chettiars, a merchant-banking caste that played a central role in South Indian banking and trade in the period from 1870 to 1930, Rudner explores the nature of non-capitalist economic formations and the impact of colonial rule on indigenous commercial systems, as well as variety and change among India`s caste and ethnic groups. Regardless of theoretical perspectives adopted by anthropologists and historians studying social organization in South Asia, certain assumptions have remained unchallenged: that all castes are organized either by marriage alliance or status hierarchy and that caste structures are incompatible with the "rational" conduct of business. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and archival research, Rudner argues against such monolithic characterizations. He demonstrates that in the case of the Nattukotai Chettiars, caste and commerce are inextricably linked through formal and informal alliance, institutions, and practices crucial to the formation and distribution of capital. Rudner traces the growth of these structures over the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, exploring the ways in which Indian merchant-bankers used indigenous social structures to profit from colonial rule. Caste and Capitalism in Colonial India is the first comprehensive analysis of the interdependence among Indian business practice, social organization, and religion. Rudner`s findings have significant implications for scholars of Asian history and anthropology. Printed Pages: 366., Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Paperback. New Book. Paperback. Guelke (comparative politics, Queen's U. of Belfast, Ireland) and Tournon (National Foundation of Political Science, Institute of Political Studies, U. of Grenoble, France) assemble five essays that analyze the study of ethnicity and politics from various angles. Political scientists from the US, Europe, Canada, and Israel discuss the definition of ethnicity; the study of ethnic and nationalist mobilization from a comparative perspective and international implications of the quest for secession to which ethno-nationalist movements give rise, as well as democratization; national and ethnic conflict regulation; the impact of the end of the Cold War, the global war on terror, and the worldwide economic crisis on the study of politics and ethnicity; and the research in the field over a period of 30 years. There is no index. Distributed by ISBS. (2012 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR), Barbara Budrich Publishers, 2012

Recent Analytical Developments The book analyses the study of the growing field of ethnicity and politics from a number of different angles. These include the nature of the subject itself, different theoretical approaches, ways of addressing political issues the relationship gives rise to, the impact of major global challenges and a survey of output in the field. Comprehensive text book makes great course reading. Questions of identity, particularly ethnicity, play an increasingly important role in peoples lives. They are also of growing significance in both domestic and international politics. The increased attention to these issues has been matched by the mushrooming of scholarship in the field of ethnicity and politics. The chapters in this survey of recent analytical developments examine the contribution that this literature has made within the broad area of comparative politics within the discipline of political science. They are written by experts active in the international network of scholars that has been devoted to the study of this subject. The question of what we mean when we use ethnic terminology is rigorously interrogated. And the major theoretical approaches to the study of ethnicity and politics are critically examined. Ways of addressing ethnic diversity are debated under the wide headings of accommodation and integration. The issue of ethnicity in world politics is considered through an analysis of how watersheds of the last 25 years, including the end of the Cold War, 9/11 and the global economic downturn have impacted on the study of the subject. Also analysed is the output of publications in scholarly journals that has addressed this subject area. From the Contents: Ethnicity What are we talking about? (Jean Touron) Ethnic and national mobilization (Eric Kaufmann/Daniele Conversi) The Politics of accomodation and integration in democratic States (Brendan OLeary/John McGarry) Global Watersheds and the Study of ethno-politics (Adrian Guelke) Who is doing what, where and how in the study of ethnicity and politics (Britt Cartrite/Dan Miodownik) Bücher / Fremdsprachige Bücher / Englische Bücher 978-3-86649-452-7, Budrich UniPress Ltd.
