Paperback / softback. New. Written originally in Me'phaa, Hubert Matiuwaa's First Rain is a selection of poems that emerged from responding to the death of a grandmother who declared in 2005: I will die in the days when the first rains come. The work mourns both the loss of a grandmother, the fading away of a culture and language that hold so much history and pride., 6, Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) is widely considered one of the greatest saints of all time. She is best known for her mystical "Dialogue" with God the Father, for which she was declared a Doctor of the Church, but her letters are also unmatched in their spiritual power and profundity. Many people do not know that St Catherine was also a stigmatist, bearing the wounds and suffering the passion of Christ for the salvation of souls. She prayed to God to make the wounds invisible so as not to draw attention to herself. Only her confessor, Blessed Raymond of Capua, knew of her sharing in the sufferings of Our Lord until the day the saint died, when the wounds became visible for all to see. This edition of The Letters of St. Catherine, originally published in 1905 (but now in more modern English in this newly revised and edited version), includes an Introduction on the Life and Times of the Saint, a description of Saint Catherine as Seen in her Letters, the Chief Events in the Life of Saint Catherine, and a Brief Outline of Contemporary Public Events. FROM THE PUBLISHER - The most popular classical composer of our day was born with a medical deformity so severe that his parents had to fight to keep him alive. When the child of novelist Kenzaburo Oe and his wife, Yukari, was born with a herniated brain, the doctors recommended letting him die. Instead, his parents defied Japan's then-harsh customs and saved him with a complicated operation that left him severely handicapped. They named him Hikari, which means light'; now in his thirties, with an I.Q. of 65, limited language and motor skills, and an inability to express emotions clearly, Hikari has indeed become a beacon of inspiration. He has miraculous musical gifts, including a phenomenal memory and the ability to compose chamber works that have broken sales records and delighted hundreds of thousands of listeners. Based on exclusive access to the Oe family, as well as interviews with brain specialists and performers of Hikari's music, and including assessments by leading music critics, THE MUSIC OF LIGHT offers a portrait of uniqueness. Hikari is the only savant known in history who has composed original music. Lindsley Cameron explains how his brain works; how he can express sadness in his music but not with language or his face; and how his musical activities have extended his mental capacities. The creative interdependence of father and son is unprecedented, too. Kenzaburo's need to give Hikari a voice was so essential to his own art that he announced, just before winning the Nobel Prize, that he was giving up writing fiction because Hikari, through his music, had now found a voice of his own. inventory #25397 ISBN: 0684824094., 0, New York. 1986. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Little known in this country when he died in 1979, Landolfi is scarcely better recognized today, a situation this collection of 24 stories, with an introduction by Italo Calvino, is intended to remedy. Landolfi did not aspire to amuse or entertain in the usual sense; he preferred to confound and mystify. Even in his relatively conventional stories he scarcely bothered to inquire into motive or seek resolution. In Uxoricide,' for example, a wife-murderer sets out to kill the shrew for reasons that do not seem quite sufficient, so that the act itself appears brutal and sadistic. In A Woman's Breast,' a man lusts after that part of a stranger until he attains it, is thereupon sickened by the sight and discovers odd morbidities within himself. Landolfi's overriding interests in language and its literary possibilities, metaphysics, literary criticism necessarily limit his audience. He saw the writer as one who spits words (see the title story), and he set himself against the critics who accused him of being utterly indecipherable and mysterious.' That is, however, a challenge hurled at the reader. - PUBLISHERS WEEKLY. inventory #26008 ISBN: 0670805181., 0, Blandford Press, London, 1969. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Very Good/N/A. Illustrator: Photo's & Drawings. black titles spine; illustrated by b/w. photo's. & drawings; cover design by Peter Chadwick iincorporating a portrait of Chaucer from MS Harley 4866. courtesy of the British Museum; the second half of the fourteenth century started under the shadow of the Black Death and moved sombrely on through the spoliations of the Hundred Years War, the senility of Edward Ill, a notable earthquake, the persecution of an early Protestantism, and the upheavals of the Peasants' Revolt, to the murder of Richard II and the usurpation of Henry IV. But something wonderfully enduring occurred, too: the emergence of the English language and its literature from their long domination by Norman French. The period coincides with the lifetime of Chaucer, and when he died in 1400 the safety and the shape of the language were established beyond-doubt. The endeavour of this book is to let the writers of various "schools", and some wayward geniuses, interpret their age for us in their own words; and though every quotation is at once translated in a close yet readable style, help is given at the beginning so that the original music of the poetry can be read aloud and heard. It was a brilliant age, in literature as in architecture, but for the historian of ideas the English language was relatively silent and Latin the vehicle; thus there will be disappointing gaps in the record, and some obtuseness in observation, but the combination of great English writers with vast events makes 1350-1400 the obvious starting-point for this series."; previous owner's name inside front cover; a sound copy with only slight edge-wear; including index - 318 pages. including index - pages.
