The Greeks also had important settlements in Africa, so that none of the Mediterranean shores escaped their colonizing genius. We have seen that the Dorians had occupied the volcanic Island of Thera (Santorin). Grinos, king of the island, says Herodotos, went to Delphi, carrying a hecatomb to offer to Apollo, and being accompanied by several citizens, among others Battos, son of Polymnestos. As the king was consulting the oracle on other affairs, the Pythia suddenly interposed, admonishing him to build a city in Libya. But he answered that he was too old and heavy to undertake the task, and directed attention to Battos as a more suitable person. This was all that passed at the time, and the Therans departed; they paid no attention to the oracle, neither knowing in what part of the world Libya was, nor daring to send Note. --The illustration on the opposite page is from a photograph taken during the eruption of December, 1866. out a colony on an uncertainty. But for seven years after this no rain fell in the island, and every tree except one was withered up. They show, in part, the range of temperature of this sea throughout the year; how it varies with the different seasons, and what a great difference exists between the maximum summer heat of the surface-water, and its minimum in winter; and how, as a reservoir of heat, this sea, in common with all other great collections of water, must tend to equalize the temperature of the superincumbent atmosphere, and to affect the climate of its islands and shores. It is commonly believed that the temperature of the Mediterranean is generally higher than that of the ocean in corresponding latitudes. This, I am inclined to think, has been rather hypothetically assumed than proved by actual observation. From the results of my own observations, I am disposed to infer, on the contrary, that the temperature of the Mediterranean is rather lower than that of the ocean. The following observations made on approaching the Strait, in 1824 and 1840, are a few of the most decisive: --Probably an exaggerated idea of the high temperature of the Mediterranean has been acquired casually, from the remarks of travellers on the warmth of its waters in harbours and shallows, frequented in bathing in the hot season. On the ocean, the thermometer has proved a useful instrument in navigation, for the purpose of detecting currents. Whether it admits of the same application in the Mediterranean, remains to be determined. It probably may be thus useful, especially in the Archipelago, through a considerable portion of which a cold current flows, derived from the Hellespont.
