Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. LOCAL DEITIES. The majority of the local deities of the Slave Coast are similar in all material respects to those of the Gold Coast that are described in Chapter V. of the Tshispeaking peoples; they belong in fact to the same level of religious culture, and are the indwelling spirits, the bras, so to speak, of lagoons, streams, pools of water, tracts of bush or forest, rocks, hills, etc., or of reefs, rocks in the sea, or portions of the sea-shore. From the very nature of their being, from the very fact of their being the spiritual individualities of natural features, they have a more restricted sphere of influence than the general and tribal deities; for the general deities may practically be regarded as omnipresent throughout the territories of the Ewe-speaking peoples as a whole, and the tribal deities throughout those of the tribe or tribes who worship them; since both are worshipped daily, over large areas, in communities widely separated. Of course the negro mind cannot conceive the possibility of the same god being present in several places at once, a conception which belongs to a higher stage of religious development than that which he has attained; but the native never asks himself questions of this kind, and as each group of worshippers believes that the god is, for the time being, in the image or shrine before which they are offering their prayers and sacrifice, the general and tribal gods may be taken as being, to all intents and purposes, omnipresent. The local gods, on the other hand, being each identified with some distinct natural feature or object, so that the god cannot be thought of except in connection with it, are naturally only worshipped by those who live near, for people at a distance are absolutely unaware of their exis...
