The Cranham clay is supposed to have furnished the material which was employed in the pottery found in the Boman Villa, at Coopers Hill, near Gloucester, and at Cirencester. ( Red alluvial clay, deposited by the periodic overflow, and gradual change in the course of the Severn. Clay from 15 to 1G feet in depth, lying in a depression in the lias, quite free from liine, salt, or sand, except in the lowest draw, where sand is frequently found in patches, which causes the bricks to blow in the kiln, and is consequently left behind in digging. It is very plastic, easily worked, but strong and liable to curl much in drying. Having little or no silica in it, it shrinks greatly while burning; to correct which sea sand is worked in with it in small proportion, i. e. in brick making, none being used with the pipes. The blue clay, in the basin of which the bed lies, is wholly unfit for manufacture, being full of lime, with a good deal of sand and a great many of the commonest fossils, as ammonites, belemites, and c. Some yards in this neighbourhood have a great amount of grinding, crushing. and -c. , to do, and in one, now closed, the proprietor had to pick out the fossils by hand.
