Sir,--I can fully corroborate Mr. Howlott's remark in this month's Register, that the minimum period of solar spots seems to have occurred before September 1867; for since that month, by my own observation, the spots have been steadily increasing in number. I do not think there was any great scarcity between November 1867 and February 1868, as Mr. Howlett observes. My own observations show rather an increase. The fine group mentioned as being visible in September 1867 I noticed on September 9th, the principal spot of which, on the 14th, was distinctly visible to the naked eye; and this identical spot, I believe, I watched during at least four revolutions of the sun. I was able to observe three disappearances very well; and though cloudy weather prevented me seeing more than one reappearance, it was in such positions on the disc during the three other transits, I have no doubt at all about it being the same identical spot; the time of the disappearances and reappearances occurred so regularly to the apparent period of the sun's rotation. I mention these particulars, as it is rather uncommon for a spot to remain in existence for so long a time.
