The Apocalypse and Semitic Syntax (Society for New Testament Studies Monograph Series) - Livres de poche

ISBN: 0521018781

[SR: 4726338], Paperback, [EAN: 9780521018784], Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Press, Book, [PU: Cambridge University Press], Cambridge University Press, The Apocalypse and Semitic Syntax presents the results of a close study of features of the Greek syntax of the New Testament Apocalypse which arguably reflect the influence of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages. It opens with a discussion of the use of differing manuscript readings of the Apocalypse in weighing Semitic influence, then moves to an examination of selected Greek verbs in the Apocalypse which seem to demand the meaning of their Hebrew/Aramaic counterparts, rather than their conventional Greek meaning. The heart of the study consists of suggested Semitic influence in numerous places where the verbal syntax in the Apocalypse departs, sometimes quite strikingly, from conventional Greek syntax. The study then suggests Hebrew/Aramaic influence on the syntax of several types of clauses in the Apocalypse. The author concludes that cumulative evidence supports the hypothesis that the Apocalypse was composed in a variety of Greek that was intended to evoke biblical Hebrew and Aramaic, providing yet another link between his work and that of the Torah, Prophets and Writings of the Hebrew Bible., 12196, New Testament, 720864, Bible Study, 172810, Bible Study & Reference, 12290, Christian Books & Bibles, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 12165, Criticism & Interpretation, 12177, Exegesis & Hermeneutics, 12168, New Testament, 12170, Old Testament, 172810, Bible Study & Reference, 12290, Christian Books & Bibles, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 21, Reference, 11444, Almanacs & Yearbooks, 11448, Atlases & Maps, 2572, Careers, 11626, Catalogs & Directories, 11472, Consumer Guides, 11475, Dictionaries & Thesauruses, 11713, Encyclopedias & Subject Guides, 11823, English as a Second Language, 11761, Etiquette, 11773, Foreign Language Study & Reference, 11880, Genealogy, 11902, Quotations, 8975382011, Survival & Emergency Preparedness, 5267710011, Test Preparation, 11970, Words, Language & Grammar, 5267707011, Writing, Research & Publishing Guides, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 22, Religion & Spirituality, 12762, Agnosticism, 12764, Atheism, 12279, Buddhism, 12290, Christian Books & Bibles, 12506, Hinduism, 12522, Islam, 12540, Judaism, 12489, Literature & Fiction, 12621, New Age & Spirituality, 12689, Occult & Paranormal, 12735, Other Eastern Religions & Sacred Texts, 12761, Other Religions, Practices & Sacred Texts, 1873, Religious Art, 12779, Religious Studies, 12809, Worship & Devotion, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books

The Apocalypse and Semitic Syntax - Livres de poche

ISBN: 9780521018784

ID: 593134675

Cambridge University Press. Paperback. New. Paperback. 168 pages. Dimensions: 8.3in. x 5.3in. x 0.5in.This book offers a consistent explanation of the peculiarity of the language of the Apocalypse (or Book of Revelation), namely that the rules of Greek grammar are broken because of the influence of Hebrew and Aramaic. It advances previous similar hypotheses in three ways. First, it focuses chiefly on the verbal system. Secondly, by methodically citing the ancient Greek translations of the Old Testament to demonstrate HebrewAramaic influence, it serves as a limited survey of the syntax of the Septuagint. Thirdly, it argues that the Apocalypses grammar was influenced not by later HebrewAramaic dialects in use during the first century AD but by Old Testament HebrewAramaic. This thesis suggests a new approach to the Apocalypse that gives greater attention to the influence of Old Testament HebrewAramaic grammar and a fuller awareness of the writers indebtedness to the Old Testament.
