New York: Hart Publishing Company. 1972. Hard Cover. 0805510427 . 538 pages, illustrations, cloth, dj, ex-library with usual library markings otherwise very good. From the dj: From the dj: 'Alexander Sutherland Neill - genius or crackpot? Monumental figure in man's progress toward better modes of education? Or a disturbing gadfly whose combustible theories have been too much for the Establishment? Whatever history's final assessment of this man, Neill's controversial school in Suffolk has in fifty years wielded an enormous influence on child training throughout the world. His seminal book, Summerhill: A Radical Approach to Child Rearing, has sold more than a million copies in English, has been translated into fifteen languages, and is required reading in very many university courses. With sardonic wit, affection and rueful memory, Neill traces his precarious life, which began just about ninety years ago in a small Scottish village, within the confines of an impoverished Calvinistic home. . . . Neill's autobiography tells of those who helped and influenced him - Lane, Wilhelm Reich, his second wife Ena, and daughter Zoe - and his experiences in keeping his unorthodox school afloat. It also expounds his radical ideas about education, sex, politics, psychology. Neill also discusses the future of Summerhill. The volume also contains an interesting album of photographs, an appendix of Neill's letters to newspapers, and passages from A Dominie's Log, which reveal his educational concepts as early as 1915. From the Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 'Alexander Sutherland Neill, 1883-1973, English educator. After teaching at state schools in Scotland, Neill became dissatisfied with traditional education. In 1924, he set up the progressive coeducational Summerhill School at Leiston, England. Among the school’s experiments were optional attendance, a school parliament, and no religious instruction. Neill’s works include The Problem Child (1927), The Problem Family (1949), and Summerhill (1960). He ideas, although controversial, continue to be debated.' ., Hart Publishing Company, 1972, Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Algonquin Books Of Chapel Hill, 2006. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Purple paper-covered boards with purple backstrip and gilt lettering. Light bump to head and heel of spine, hint of edgewear. Text is clean and white, no marks. Unclipped DJ shows extremely mild edgewear. "Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski's ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show On Earth. Memories of a world filled with freaks and clowns, with wonder and pain and anger and passion; a world with its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell." (from the jacket), Algonquin Books Of Chapel Hill, 2006

Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski's ninety-something-year-old mind. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell. Jacob was there because his luck had run out-orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive "ship of fools." It was the early part of the Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, was there because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant was there because she was the great gray hope, the new act that was going to be the salvation of the circus; the only problem was, Rosie didn't have an act-in fact, she couldn't even follow instructions. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival. Surprising, poignant, and funny, "Water for Elephants" is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so real, one starts to breathe its air. Jacob Jankowski says: "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other." At the beginning of Water for Elephants, he is living out his days in a nursing home, hating every second of it. His life wasn't always like this, however, because Jacob ran away and joined the circus when he was twenty-one. It wasn't a romantic, carefree decision, to be sure. His parents were killed in an auto accident one week before he was to sit for his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell. He buried his parents, learned that they left him nothing because they had mortgaged everything to pay his tuition, returned to school, went to the exams, and didn't write a single word. He walked out without completing the test and wound up on a circus train. The circus he joins, in Depression-era America, is second-rate at best. With Ringling Brothers as the standard, Benzini Brothers is far down the scale and pale by comparison. Water for Elephants is the story of Jacob's life with this circus. Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which he finds himself. The animals are mangy, underfed or fed rotten food, and abused. Jacob, once it becomes known that he has veterinary skills, is put in charge of the "menagerie" and all its ills. Uncle Al, the circus impresario, is a self-serving, venal creep who slaps people around because he can. August, the animal trainer, is a certified paranoid schizophrenic whose occasional flights into m contemporary, genre fiction, historical, literary, literature and fiction, romance Romance, Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill

Left a penniless orphan in the Great Depression, Jacob became part of the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, a traveling circus. There he met Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, who's love for the circus boss tortured her metaphorically and literally. And Rosie the elephant, who was supposed to save the circus but couldn't even follow instructions. Overthe course of time, a bond formed among Jacob, Marlena, and Rosie that filled their lives with joy and, ultimately, was their hope for survival. Touching and funny, 'Water for Elephants' is the story of friendship in the midst of chaos.
