Rainbow's End: The Judy Garland Show - Première édition

1994, ISBN: 9780688090883

Livres de poche, Edition reliée, ID: 534449762

Perth & Kinross Libraries, 1991. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 6" x 8.5. h/b 192 pages, condition is very good, the spine of the DJ is faded. This story of the success and failure of a family engaged in the dyeing industry is the first to take an objective look at Pullars of Perth. At the height of the Industrial Revolution, while others dreamed of a "Manchester in the North" based on linen and cotton, the Pu11ars, a family of weavers opened a small dyeing establishment in Burt's Close, Perth. In the face of innumerable difficulties they slowly expanded until by the mid-19th century "Pullars of Perth" had become a by-word for fast and efficient service, especially in dry-cleaning, not only in London, but in Paris and Berlin! This was no economic miracle. The Pullars' success was due entirely to hard work, successful planning and clever advertising. Always ready to introduce the latest types of machinery they had a reputation as good employers. Their success was reflected in their life-style and influence in Perth. Then, suddenly, things started to go sour. Challenged by a powerful Trade Union and an increasingly militant female work-force, the Pullars, despite their long experience and compassion, could not cope. Strikes and riots led to a violent ending between the family and Perth. Bill Harding has recorded, in fine detail, the trials and tribulations of one of Perth's major industries a significant part of Perth's modem history., Perth & Kinross Libraries, 1991, New York, NY Random House: Vintage Crime / Black Lizard, 1991. Paperback First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated. Very Good in Wraps: shows indications of very careful use: light wear to extremities, with a tiny crease right at the lower front corner tip; mild rubbing to wrapper covers and a bit of faint soiling; the binding leans a little, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. Remains structurally sound and tightly bound, and despite light wear, is clean, sturdy, presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 139pp. First Edition Thus; First Printing indicated [1991]. Copyright 1947. Trade Paperback. 'Nightfall' is a short novel by David Goodis, written at the height of his career. True to form, Goodis focuses on a single character and his angst. This time we have a man who has difficulty remembering the details of his involvement with $300,000 taken in a bank heist. On his tail are the bank robbers and the police. a man on the run from the law, and the sympathetic policeman who takes an interest in his case. A beautiful book, spare and haunting. Not a wasted word. Goodis sometimes reaches for poetry in his tales, but here he achieves it with a delicate poise. This is one of the great post-war thrillers, and as close as anyone's ever come to evoking film noir on the page. Dark, brooding and claustrophobic. Just the way we like it. A must-read for those into 'noir' fiction., Random House: Vintage Crime / Black Lizard, 1991., UK: David & Charles, 1994. Just under a kilo & 159 pp. Capture the essence of gardens and plants on film, using 200 vibrant and breathtaking images as an example! Internationally renowned garden photographer Clive Nichols offers expert advice on everything from choosing the right equipment to presenting the finished product. Enjoy a full discussion of the importance and roles of cameras, films, lenses, and accessories. Choose from a variety of approaches; vistas, close-ups, and abstracts receive thorough consideration. Experienced garden photographers know that you don't have to work only during the height of summer -- the rest of the year offers plenty of scope for taking immensely satisfying pictures, too. Become acutely aware of the effects, both negative and positive, of weather and lighting, and get invaluable instruction on achieving the best possible results. If you're hoping to turn this hobby into a profession, then hard-earned insights, taken from Nichols's own experiences, will alert you to the difficulties -- and pleasures -- of this competitive career. Faults? small repaired tears at flapfold.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Excellent/Very Good. 30cm., David & Charles, 1994, NY: William Morrow & Co., 1990. First edition. From Publishers Weekly The last major effort of Judy Garland's career was the Judy Garland Show , which aired on CBS for 26 weeks in 1963-64. Its commercial failure has often been attributed to the star's insecurity, her problems with substance abuse, and her difficulty in dealing with the pressures of producing a weekly series. In this well-researched, objective work, TV journalist Sanders portrays Garland as a demanding individual but blames the network for the show's demise. He describes network infighting and monumental ego battles and provides almost minute-by-minute details of how each show was put together. Garland fans will appreciate Sanders's senstive yet straightforward treatment of this troubled superstar--and look forward with interest to the release of the shows on videotape. Photos not seen by PW. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal This Garland book carves out a niche for itself in the mass of material about the singer with a specialized focus on her 1963-64 television series. Sanders, a former editor for The Hollywood Reporter , interviewed many Garland contemporaries and gleaned information from detailed fan publications to create an inside look at how a talented entertainer was forced into an inappropriate weekly format against Bonanza 's established Sunday time slot. The appendix has complete rundowns of each show: guests, songs and sketches, date taped, date aired, etc. For libraries with hard-core Garland fans or an interest in television/entertainment history. - Rebecca Sturm Kelm, Northern Kentucky Univ. Lib., Highland Heights Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good +. Illus. by Some B/W Photos., William Morrow & Co., 1990
