STORIES AND POEMS FOR EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT CHILDREN OF ALL AGES - exemplaire signée

2001, ISBN: 9780684868738

Edition reliée, ID: 896943712

New York City, NY: Scribner, 2001. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Scribner, 2001. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 575 pages. Retrospective collection of stories and poems. One of the best collections of its kind ever published in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Harold Bloom's "Stories And Poems For Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages". A brilliant and rewarding reminder-selection of the greatest short stories and poems in the Western tradition. The key phrase of the extremely long title is "of all ages", which makes Bloom's selection "elitist" and inclusive at the same time. That is, he means ALL serious readers. As anyone familiar with Bloom's aesthetics, not just critical standards, of superior intelligence knows, the title is not pretentious but ironic. He gives grown-ups avid permission to dip into his book because there is much in it to discover, re-discover, and treasure. As Bloom repeatedly makes clear, the choice is not between The Old and The New (we need them both) but between what's great and what's mediocre (we need only the former). The choice would seem to be obvious, but it really isn't in our prevailing culture of identity politics. As such, Bloom's book is a refreshing antidote to the meretricious derivative products being packaged and marketed today by publishers and their hack-writers. Beware: Bloom savors irony of the most pungent, uncompromising kind. He believes that a sense of irony must be instilled at a very young age (even though it is never too late to develop one at any age). Dismissive of contemporary children's literature, Bloom stubbornly insists once more that we go back to the great ironic writers: "Children's literature is a mask for the dumbing-down that is destroying our literary culture. Most of what is now commercially offered as children's literature would be inadequate fare for any reader of any age at any time" (Harold Bloom). "Every single one of these masterpieces is worthy of reading, re-reading, and reading aloud. Includes Aesop, Rudyard Kipling, Edward Lear, Christina Rossetti, Lewis Carroll, Robert Louis Stevenson, Christopher Smart, William Shakespeare, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and many more" (Margaret Chang). An absolute "must-have" title for Harold Bloom collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Harold Bloom. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest literary critic of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HAROLD BLOOM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0684868733., Scribner, 2001

Harold Bloom:

Stories and Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages - edition reliée, livre de poche

2001, ISBN: 0684868733

[SR: 169909], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780684868738], Scribner, Scribner, Book, [PU: Scribner], 2001-10-02, Scribner, A collection of stories and poems, arranged in four sections corresponding to the four seasons., Apart from the Extremely Pompous title, and the heavy bent toward masculine authors, this collection of classics by the likes of Tolstoy, Edith Wharton, O. Henry, and Lewis Carroll is vastly impressive. And editor Harold Bloom does, of course, explain his title in the introduction. He believes that all the included authors "make themselves open to authentic readers of any age." Despising most "commercially offered" contemporary children's literature, Bloom offers up the greats: Edward Lear's "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat," Shakespeare's "The Lion in Winter," Hans Christian Andersen's "The Red Shoes," and dozens upon dozens more, organized on a seasonal scheme. Here, readers of all ages can learn, grow, be entertained, reflect. Bloom quotes poet Wallace Stevens in his test for verse or prose: "it must change, it must give pleasure, and it must be abstract." Every one of these masterpieces of varying lengths is worthy of reading, rereading, and reading aloud--Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages would be wise to look beyond the title and devour this 573-page anthology, cover to cover. Bloom is the author of more than 20 other books, including another tome on the art of reading, How to Read and Why. If readers are to come to Shakespeare and to Chekhov, to Henry James and to Jane Austen, then they are best prepared if they have read Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling," writes Harold Bloom in his introduction to this enchanting and much-needed anthology of exceptional stories and poems selected to inspire a lifelong love of reading. As television, video games, and the Internet threaten to distract young people from the solitary pleasures of reading, Bloom presents a volume that will amuse, challenge, and beguile readers with its myriad voices and subjects. Here are old favorites by beloved writers of children's literature, as well as exciting rediscoveries and wonderful works penned by writers better known for their adult classics, such as Herman Melville, Leo Tolstoy, Edith Wharton, and Walt Whitman. Encompassing the natural world and the supernatural; childhood, romance, and death; house pets, wild animals, and goblins; mystery, adventure, and humor, the selections reflect the passion and erudition of our most revered literary critic. Dismayed by the current state of children's literature, Bloom reaches back to the imaginative works of the nineteenth century and earlier, choosing poems and stories that will expand the mind and offer the magical companionship of the best that has been written. Arranged by season, "Stories and Poems for Extremely Intelligent Children of All Ages" is a must-have anthology, sure to delight readers young and old for years to come.
