Bentley, Phyllis:

The Brontes and their world., - livre d'occasion

1978, ISBN: 0500130248

ID: 11997611143

[EAN: 9780500130247], Fine, [SC: 9.68], [PU: Thames and Hudson,], FAMILIENGESCHICHTE, BRONTË, LITERATURGESCHICHTE, ENGLISCHE LITERATUR, 144 S.; zahlr. Abb. Ein gutes Ex. - 140 Illustrationen. - The Bronte sisters not only have an important place in English literature; they have become part of English folklore as well. They still fascinate us, not only through the qualities they possessed in common but through the differences between them which are apparent in their work the passionate intensity of Emily's Wuthering Heights and her poetry; the blend of romance and realism in Charlotte's Jane 'Eyre and Villette, the domestic drama of Anne's The Tenant of WildfellHall. Dr Bentley brings deep understanding and a lifetime's knowledge to this new biography of the sisters and their brother Branwell. Her book makes it clear that, apart from their interest as writers and as individuals, the Bronte's have a wider social significance. For they lived when the Industrial Revolution was gaining momentum in Yorkshire and the Midlands; this is reflected in the conflict between solitary integrity and worldliness which can be sensed in their work, and which intensifies the drama of their lives. The photographs, some of them rare, illustrate every aspect of the Brontes' lives, family, surroundings and works from Mrs Gaskell's drawing of the parsonage at Haworth to one of the fascinating 'little books' written in the Brontes' childhood, which throws such vivid light on the workings of literary genius. Dr Bentley was born and lived until her death in 1977 in Halifax - eight miles from Haworth. She gave many lectures and broadcasts about the Brontes, and was for many years a member of the Bronte Society Council. Her own novels-which describe the life of the West Riding people are world-famous.
