His gifts were so versatile, his power of work so prodigious, the fields of his activity so diversified, that many of those who admired him and sought him in one sphere of activity had but the slightest idea of his achievements in another. Nor was his personality, with its manifold facets, appreciated in its entirety except by comparatively few. Physically, intellectually, morally, spiritually, he was fashioned in large mould. High lights and deep shades flitted across the pathway of his life. In spite of great outward successes he did not always find life easy. Like Saul of old he often had need of a David to charm away those deep depressions that are so often the accompaniment of genius. In the following pages an attempt has been made to give a comprehensive, albeit a short, account of his life story. Speaking of the art of the biographer Sir Bertram once expressed the opinion that the task should never be undertaken by a near relative, and that the subject of a biography should be allowed to tell his own story by means of letters and extracts from his own writings and utterances. These principles have been acted upon whenever it was possible to do so. The main sources of information for this memoir have been provided by a collection of family papers, personal letters and diaries, and innumerable newspaper cuttings. Many people have been good enough to lend their letters, in some cases a complete correspondence. Few of these letters could be reproduced verbatim because of their personal character or on account of references to people still living. Of such as might he printed there yet remains material that might suffice for a bulky separate volume of letters. In this volume many omissions, not always indicated, have necessarily been made from individual letters. It has not been considered necessary to give a separate bibliography of Sir Bertram's books and articles, as these are all mentioned incidentally in the text. On the other hand the bibliography of his research papers is given as a separate item. On all sides requests for help have met with a most cordial response.
