Antony`s Brigg`s acclaimed translation of Tolstoy`s great Russian epic, soon to be a miniseries on A&E, The History Channel, and Lifetime starring Lily James ( Downtown Abbey ), Paul Dano ( There Will Be Blood ), and James Norton ( Grantchester ) Set against the sweeping panoply of Napoleon`s invasion of Russia, War and Peace -presented here in the first new English translation in forty years-is often considered the greatest novel ever written. At its center are Pierre Bezukhov, searching for meaning in his life cynical Prince Andrei, ennobled by wartime suffering and Natasha Rostov, whose impulsiveness threatens to destroy her happiness. As Tolstoy follows the changing fortunes of his characters, he crafts a view of humanity that is both epic and intimate and that continues to define fiction at its most resplendent. This edition includes an introduction, note on the translation, cast of characters, maps, notes on the major battles depicted, and chapter summaries. Praise for Antony Brigg`s translation of War and Peace : `The best translation so far of Tolstoy`s masterpiece into English.` -Robert A. Maguire, professor emeritus of Russian studies, Columbia University `In Tolstoy`s work part of the translator`s difficulty lies in conveying not only the simplicity but the subtlety of the book`s scale and effect. . . . Briggs has rendered both with a particular exactness and a vigorous precision not to be found, I think, in any previous translation.` -John Bayley, author of Elegy for Iris For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. War and Peace - nouveau livre

ISBN: 9780140447934

In 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia. This work entwines themes of conflict and love, birth and death, free will and fate - with scenes of nineteenth-century Russia, to create an epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur. Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace is a sprawling epic covering the impact of Napoleon's disastrous invasion of Russia on five different families. This Penguin Classics edition is translated with an introduction and notes by Anthony Briggs, with an afterword by Orlando Figes, author of A People's Tragedy: Russian Revolution 1891-1924 . At a glittering society party in St Petersburg in 1805, conversations are dominated by the prospect of war. Terror swiftly engulfs the country as Napoleon's army marches on Russia, and the lives of three young people are changed forever. The stories of quixotic Pierre, cynical Andrey and impetuous Natasha interweave with a huge cast, from aristocrats and peasants to soldiers and Napoleon himself. In War and Peace , Tolstoy entwines grand themes - conflict and love, birth and death, free will and faith - with unforgettable scenes of nineteenth-century Russia, to create a magnificent epic of human life in all its imperfection and grandeur. Anthony Briggs's superb translation combines stirring, accessible prose with fidelity to Tolstoy's original, while Orlando Figes's afterword discusses the novel's vast scope and depiction of Russian identity. This edition also contains appendices, notes, a list of prominent characters and maps. Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was born at Yasnaya Polyana, in central Russia. After marrying Sofya Behrs in 1862, Tolstoy settled down, managing his estates and writing two of his best-known novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878). In 1884 Tolstoy experienced a spiritual crisis, becoming an extreme moralist, rejecting the state, the church and private property. His last novel, Resurrection (1900), was written to raise money for the Doukhobor sect of Christian spiritualists. If you enjoyed War and Peace , you might also like Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov . 'A masterpiece ... This new translation is excellent' - Anthony Beevor 'A book that you don't just read, you live' - Simon Schama Bücher / Fremdsprachige Bücher / Englische Bücher / Romane & Erzählungen / Romane & Erzählungen 978-0-14-044793-4, Penguin Books Ltd
